Now comes the difficult part for Dan Whalen: Playing the waiting game.

Waiting to hear if another NFL team calls to bring him in for a workout.

Waiting to hear if a team is interested in signing him as a street free agent following the conclusion of the NFL draft in two weeks.

Until then, Whalen, a South graduate, is satisfied he represented himself well as a dark horse NFL prospect. His latest workout, Sunday in Berea for the Browns, along with more than 20 other prospects from the area, went well, Whalen said.

He ran the 40-yard dash twice, performed a few drills and made about 70 throws on about 15 different routes to receivers Ray Small (Ohio State), Trey Stross (Iowa), Robby Parris (Notre Dame), Frank Ross (John Carroll) and Derek McBryde (Kent State).

Whalen was the only quarterback at the workout, at which Coach Eric Mangini, quarterbacks coach Carl Smith and others were in attendance. President Mike Holmgren was not in attendance, said Whalen. He did not talk to Mangini — he watched from a distance, Whalen said — but had a good conversation with Smith. Overall, the workout was the stuff of dreams, the Case Western Reserve quarterback said.

"It was awesome," Whalen said of Sunday's workout. "As a kid growing up rooting for the Browns, playing high school and college ball in the area ... We all know the Browns have never played in a Super Bowl. What if you could be that guy to help get them there? I know people will roll their eyes, but that's what I'm shooting for. That's my plan and my goal."

Whalen said there were "about two throws that got away" from him during the workout. He was satisfied with the way he threw on the deep post routes (65 yards) the sprint-out comeback routes (18 yards), and the seven-step drop dig routes (18 yards), some of the more difficult throws for a quarterback.

"I felt good about my accuracy, and my arm felt great afterward," Whalen said. "Hopefully, they felt as good about my workout as I did."

Whalen also said he's more than comfortable under center, which is where he took the majority of his snaps on Sunday for the Browns. At Case, Whalen set numerous school records primarily in the shotgun formation.

"At all my workouts, that's all I do is go from under center," he said. "It took a few days to get used to it, but it's all about footwork. I'm fine."

Whalen will graduate from Case Western Reserve on May 16, well after the NFL draft. He's waiting to hear about two more potential workouts with the Chiefs and Ravens. If not, he hopes he's done enough.

"I've come to terms I'm not getting drafted," said Whalen. "I'm just hoping now to get an offer as a free agent."
