With our two biggest divisional rivals clearly passing us last year - the egirls winning their second SB in a decade, and the commanders making it to the NFC championship game for the first time in over 30 years, our Cowboys are in dire need of a home run off-season.

And with free agency and the draft looming, our chance to get back into the mix of teams that can realistically compete for at least some playoff wins starts soon. This may be one of the most crucial off-seasons in the long era of Jerry Jones.

With our two headed leadership team of Jerry and Stephen, there is a danger I sincerely hope they avoid: Making a “splash move” for publicity instead of doing the hard work to build a quality roster upgrade.

In short, we need QUALITY more than splash. Quality means solid impact both now and in the future. Splash may or may not be either of the above.

Why am I saying this? Because JJ as GM is really only good at one thing: Marketing. Making “splash” publicity moves. Squeezing money from every rock, and every possible source possible. He doesn’t have roster building skills. He doesn’t study film. He doesn’t even know very many players in this league outside of his own. He is not a very good judge of talent.

But Jerry Jones is good at marketing. He could sell sand in the desert. He could sell a used car to a used car salesman. His back is now somewhat against the wall. Will he turn to some splash marketing move to change the dialogue now which is focused on he and his son’s ineptitude?

Which is why I’m hoping Jerry doesn’t do something desperate using the only skill he has. I hope he focuses on using his draft chips and cap space on acquiring a set of players that make us better both now and in the future.

Quality is better than splash. We must hope that is what is ahead instead of some stupid marketing stunt.

Getting deals done before free agency is a start and then signing some free agents before the draft is the next step.

Now, if the splash move is Myles Garrett in a trade to keep him away from Philly and Washington, and pair him with Parsons...I might pay attention.

But, the price for that splash marketing/quality move is gonna be rich! 1st rounders plus a likely extension. Yikes.

We have enough draft picks that along with some FAs we could have some quality AND quantity.
A good strategy would be to sign Osa, Lewis, Lawrence, a free agent linebacker, a free agent olineman, and draft 2 running backs, and draft 2 dtackles. It's going to be interesting.

He didn't go for the splash hire with any coaches, when he could have gone hard after Deion, for instance. Hopefully, he's letting the people who do the job, do the job.

I agree we need strategic signings but you also can’t say they never make aggressive moves and then complain if they make a splash trade

Agreed. CT I’m just talking about making a splash move for the sake of changing perceptions. If they could make a big move that really would help this team, I’m all for it.

But I just don’t have any confidence these guys know how to do it.

It’s cute how they refuse to make the moves to get the over the top when the time is right, but seem ready to act when they are in danger of no longer being “relevant” just to keep their heads above water.

There’s no longer-term plan to win championships, nor are they capable of putting a plan like that into place. This has to hit rock bottom and get them to where they go the Parcells route. That’s the only hope.

The good news is you don’t have to actively root for your team to lose to make that happen, they are well on their way and that’s clear to me, along with several others around here. You don’t win with 4-5 players taking most of the cap and little depth, and that’s absolutely where this is headed.

Very well said. This is this leadership’s mode of operation. Wait until it’s obvious even to the fans that major changes are needed.

Being proactive is the methodology of teams that are winning playoff games (plural) these days. Being reactive as we have been means you’re just chasing instead of leading.

Good accurate stuff.
Nice job man.

For the most part, IMO anyway….Jerry Jones the child has to prove that he could do what Jimmy Johnson did, even if that has to head into its fourth decade of futility.

Even if he gets crazy lucky and wins one title, no one will ever see him that way, but I suppose if he hired a guy like Harbaugh and he had success, it would only accentuate that Jerry was the problem all along.

Maybe he is just a control freak and truly believes no human could be better than him at anything, especially football, since he has “seen it all.”

Does he honestly think winning in the NFL is akin to drilling for oil? Sometimes it seems to be the case. Just have to get lucky. Come on.

I hate the guy with an unmentionable passion, but in a way I feel bad for him that he chooses to deal with his ego hangups over being able to spend every day in absolute paradise (an unfathomable dream to 99.9% of the population) if he wanted to.

We just hired a McCarthy favor-hire as HC. We aren't after quality or splash. Jerry sabotaged 2024, and this year will be even worse.

The real problem is having a QB who has an enormous cap figure who couldn’t win with much better rosters when the division was worse.

I was never someone who bashed Prescott, and actually thought they had a chance with him if they had the right supporting cast, but this latest injury is extremely concerning and it’s difficult to not figure him to be on serious decline over this record contract…the one that hasn’t even as much as started just yet.

Sorry guys….you had your shot when Washington and NY were rolling over. That’s about over and you’re much closer to the bottom of the division than the top. Comp picks aren’t going to fix that.
