Conventional wisdom suggests that the Boys will look to draft a quarterback later in this draft, to be the 3rd string developmental type behind Romo and Kitna... I wouldn't be surprised if this proved to be the case, but as I've said a few times now, I don't think I'd go that road in this draft... rather, I'd wait until next year, and hope to be able to make a play for one of the "big three" who will likely be on the board then-- Tim Tebow, Mark Bradford and Colt McCoy...
I'll bet none of you readers is surprised to learn that Colt would be my favorite...
But for this year, I'd be in favor of the Boys bringing back Brooks Bollinger for one more season, then maybe going after an undrafted rookie free agent...
However, in the interest of covering all the bases, let's look at the quarterbacks in this draft that the Boys have shown some interest in, or that I think they ought to show some interest in...
THIRD ROUND:
Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston State... 6-2, 225 pounds, 4.7 second 40... I'd be completely astounded if the Boys drafted a passer before the third round, but they have shown some interest in Bomar, and at this point he's grading out as a third rounder... I wouldn't pick him, simply because of all the "knucklehead" stuff in his college days...
FOURTH ROUND:
Nate Davis, QB, Ball State... 6-2, 225 pounds, 4.95 second 40... has drawn comparisons to Quincy Carter, which I do not see as a good thing...
FIFTH ROUND:
Tom Brandstater, QB, Fresno State... 6-5, 225 pounds, 4.85 second 40... I think this is a very real possibility for the Boys, they're bringing him in for a private workout sometime this month... I'd be a lot more comfortable with spending a 5th rounder on him than a 3rd for Bomar or a 4th for Davis...
SIXTH ROUND/SEVENTH ROUND:
Nathan Brown, QB, Central Arkansas... 6-1, 220 pounds, 4.85 second 40... a little short for my taste...
Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona State... 6-2, 216 pounds, 4.9 second 40... a player the Boys have some interest in...
Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech... 6-2, 235 pounds, 4.95 second 40... ultraproductive in a spread offense, but not regarded as a top pro prospect... another player the Boys like...
David Johnson, QB, Tulsa... 6-2, 220 pounds, 4.95 second 40... only had one year as a starter for the Hurricanes, but he put up big numbers in that one year...
PRIORITY UNDRAFTED ROOKIE FREE AGENTS:
As I said earlier, I think I'd go this way after the draft, and here's a list of the reasons why:
Drew Willy, QB, Buffalo... 6-3, 216 pounds, 4.9 second 40... doesn't have a cannon arm, but he led Buffalo to perhaps their finest season ever in 08, completing 65 per cent of his passes for over 3300 yards, with 25 TDs to just 6 ints...
Chase Holbrook, QB, New Mexico State... 6-5, 240 pounds, 5.1 second 40... big pocket passer with a fine arm, Holbrook put up great numbers for a lousy team, running a spread-type offense... the Boys reportedly like his courage...
Greg Micheli, QB, Mount Union... 6-1, 210 pounds, 4.95 second 40... he doesn't have NFL size, but he was quite dominant at his low level of competition... he completed nearly 75 per cent of his passes for his CAREER, and in his last two seasons, he threw 70 TDs against just 8 ints... for his career, he has 79 TDs/9 ints...
Keith Null, QB, West Texas A&M... 6-3. 225 pounds, 4.95 second 40... Null put up big numbers in college, passing for over 9000 yards... he led the nation in passing yards per game in 2008...
Billy Malone, QB, Abilene Christian... 6-2, 235 pounds, 5.05 second 40... one of the most entertaining games of the year had to be the playoff game between West Texas A&M against Abilene Christian, Null versus Malone, two very high powered offenses... Malone leads the Lone Star Conference in virtually every career stat... he's the only QB in school history to lead his team to the Division II playoffs, and he's done it 3 straight years...
I'm convinced that among Willy, Holbrook, Micheli, Null and Malone, one or two of them will go on to at least be solid NFL backups, so I'd pass on drafting a QB this year, and instead sign one or more from this group...
