I have a question for those who live in Austin. This is in no way a political post, but I do have a question about Alex Jones. Hopefully it can be answered in a non political way.

What do the people of Austin think about Alex? Is he considered a nut case? People dont care much about him? They like having him there? Wish he was somewhere else?

Im just curious.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Feel free to pm with a response if you wish.

The majority of people don't think about him or really know about him. Although he has grown over the last 15 years, he is still a bit of a "cult" or "niche" kind of personality. Of the people who do of him, the majority think he is a nut case. He is entertaining to an extent. I don't think people either like or dislike him being here. That just doesn't matter.

He's an interesting guy... I listen to him from time to time, but he is not a "celebrity" in Austin...

He fits in to the "Keep Austin Weird" niche, but not in the way you think. Austin is full of conspiracy nuts, but he is a conspiracy nut that leans right as opposed to the conspiracy nuts in Austin that lean left...

Don't get me wrong, Jones is not an idiot, he is very intelligent, but everything is NOT a conspiracy...

I work in the electric utility industry. He regularly goes off on smart meters and how utilities are spying on us via these meters. Nothing could be further from the truth. I've talked to him and tried to explain it, but he can't get past it.

For those of you afraid of "Smart Meters"... don't be...

Is it still possible to rig those meters with relative ease? I don't know much about it, but it was a neighborhood joke growing up.

When I lived in Austin about 10 years ago, I met him about 3-4 times (we got take out pizza at the same place...lol)
He was nice guy, we talked a couple times while we waited for our pizzas. He seemed like a normal guy, he wasn't really a "celebrity" or launch into conspiracy theories. We pretty much talked about everyday things, places in the neighborhood, etc. When I did ask about his show, he said he just wanted to make people aware of topics and issues that wouldn't otherwise be reported on and felt that people had the right to know.

Spoken like someone who is spying on me.

I was driving and happened to see someone had spray painted Infowars.com on an interstate overpass. Looked it up on the computer and it took about 2 seconds to figure out it was a conspiracy nutcase site. A year or so later I heard someone talking about Alex Jones and his infowars site...Since I seen the site for what it was I pretty much pegged the dude as a conspiracy nut.

The odd thing was this was painted on an interstate in my home county in WV.

Here in Memphis, TN there are Infowars stickers plastered all over telephone poles all over town.

His disciples are everywhere and ever warning those who will listen. They see it as a patriotic duty to warn the ignorant and deceived masses. He constantly urges his listeners to get the word out for the preservation of freedom and liberty. They pity all who have deaf ears and blind eyes.

I grew up in Austin.
I worked at Texas French Bread on South Lamar and Bluebonnet for a few years a LOOOONG time ago. Before that I worked at South Point Automotive on the same corner- I kind of migrated to TFB by accident when the garage closed down.
I would personally make Stevie Ray Vaughan's brother sandwiches every weekday by request (I always gave some extra meat and cheese) for over a year. Cool cat.
I've driven that guy's various crazy trucks and hot-rods and I feel privileged for the memories and the opportunity to meet a very cool guy.

Another psuedo-celeb that would come in quite often was Alex Jones.
His radio studio was just up the street from my work and he would come in for lunch or sometimes in the morning for a coffee and some pastries.

He was always a very nice guy and not stingy with the tips.
He was just kind of starting then and I never heard of him, but he had that gravelly voice that you knew was radio.
I also used to run into him every once in awhile at the local YMCA gym nearby.
He would hit the weights, heavy, low reps for just a minute or two and then leave.

Like a total of three, four minutes at the most in the gym and gone. I always thought that was funny.

Now- as far as the stuff he puts out and what he's trying to do?
The man is trying to make money like the rest of us. That's it and this is the way he's doing it.

Still- he was always a nice person to me. I guess that counts for something.

I don't know about that, but I do think his presence harms any cause he lends himself to.

Yeah, I thought he was possibly a counter intel reverse-spook, as calling everything a conspiracy muddies the water for the real conspiracies out there. If he's not working for the CIA, they'd have to have someone else out there doing the same job.

Operation Bluebook operated in a similar way, refuting UFO sightings, with an eye to covering up the secret military aircraft that got viewed by mistake.

But he doesn't have any particular cachet around here, best I can tell.

unless you have that radio frequency sickness

The smart meters using rf frequency (or any communication type) only operate about 5 minutes a day MAX. They don't communicate 24/7 but rather when they are sending reads.

On time could be as little as 10 seconds a day. 5 minutes would be WAY up on the high scale depending on how often your utility gathers reads. Usually 6 read times a day is about max. Most utilities read 1-4 times a day.

Is it still possible to rig those meters with relative ease? I don't know much about it, but it was a neighborhood joke growing up.

Can you rig them? Yes... but it is MUCH more difficult. Depending on the AMI system, you are more than likely to get caught. Power Line Carrier systems would be the easiest to rig...
