The question is, what did Dallas actually tell Barron his role would be? Not a question of what the members of the board or media here feel his role will be, but what Barron was told he is coming here to do?

Was Barron told he will be a swing tackle with a possibility to prove himself in the future, is he coming here under the impression that he is competing for the LT spot, or was he told if he worked on his strength and technique for a year he could take Columbos spot in 2011?

Sorry in advance if this was already posted somewhere, I looked and could not find.

If he outperforms Free in camp do you really think Free would still start?

I haven't heard an answer to your question yet, but I bet some media type will ask Jerry and/or Barron early next week.

How would any of us know?

How do people know anything? I have been reading posts from Zoners about what Baron's role would be, so I thought maybe I had missed something. I asked to see if it had been clarified or if people were just talking to talk.

Big Nate says he is being brought in to compete.

So if he is the best tackle he will start.

People are speculating. We all do that. You asked what he was "actually" told. No way of knowing that unless we were there. If he has even been contacted yet. I know physicals are tomorrow.

Or unless Barron, his agent or someone from the Dallas brass had said something publicly. I was asking to clarify because I noticed some folks speaking in absolutes that caused me to wonder if it was speculation or if there was something stated by the parties involved in Barron coming to Dallas.

Did Nate give any other thoughts on how he may perform under Houck?

No offense to you JoeRod but I hate that whole" what is my role crap". Like when Crayton's agent said that PC just wanted to know what his role is now that they drafted Dez.

Evey person on the damn team has the same role. Work as freakin hard as you can then work 2x's harder than that to make yourself a better player.

Making the team oughtta be your first goal and then battle like hell to get to start. Nothing handed to anyone - ever - NOTHING EVER!

I want Butler going into camp with the mindset that he's going to beat out Ware for his spot and do ever single thing in his power to accomplish that. Will it happen? Of course not right now but if every player has that mindset it will raise the competition level.

Give 110% to be the best player you can be for the Dallas Cowboys. Absolutely REFUSE TO LOSE! That's your role!

No.

The guy looks like he has never been in a NFL weightroom.

I'm guessing he has never been pushed.

What is there to figure? When the decision to release Flozell Adams came to fruition, the decision to go ahead with Doug Free had already been made. Now, following the draft, when a 'blue chipper' was not added to the mix...the strength of a projected #1 and #2 tackle was a little thin. Brewster had not hit the field and having experienced a Pettiti in the franchise past, the team needed to add some veteran experience to the roster. As it resigned Holland to add some NFL experience to the mix, so would Barron add to the mix in the considerations for tackle.

The theme of this upcoming training camp has been termed by Jerry, one of competition for starting positions. That means that to continue on the depth chart at the top rung, every player will have to beat all comers on the Dallas roster to retain that place. This applies to Free and the projected incoming Barron. Barron gives depth considerations to both sides of the line at tackle.

The Cowboys guaranteed Barron the real competition and it appears that Barron has accepted on that basis. He has a contract in place, and now seems to be excited about coming to Dallas and getting to work. Gurantees beyond that, as with a 'rook' coming in as well, is all he has.

Nice analysis of the situation.

Well done.

I doubt a 4 year starter gets brought in to backup a first-year-to-be starter, he's coming here to compete. If he outperforms Free, he will undoubtedly start.

I'm guessing that he was told this and that's probably what will happen. In fact, I'd speculate that all three Ts, Colombo, Free, and Barron will be competing for spots, Colombo is the only one that is limited to the right side. If Free and Barron clearly outplay him, I'd suspect they both see the field, esp since Barron is going to be so much cheaper and younger to keep longterm vs Colombo. We also have Brewster developing. Come to think of it, I thought I read recently that Brewster was told he'd be competing at LT....which makes me suspect that the loser of the Barron/Free competition will be competing with Colombo for playing time and the right to earn enough trust to succeed Colombo whenever his contract or viability is up.

I just got done watching three Rams games (I watch tape of every prospective player if I am going to voice my opinion, rather than regurgitate what I hear repeated on teh internets) and this seems as good a place as any to share what little information I could gather so far.

Two of the games I watched were in their entirity (GB @ SL, NO @ SL) while the last one (SL @ SF) was an NFL On Demand version running at just 12 minutes without commercial, so naturally not all plays were included. Doesn't matter much anyway since he was benched for the 2nd half against the 49ers anyway.

He had 4 penalties combined in the three games. A holding, a false start and two illegal formations. The holding came on the last play of game against the Saints when Bulger needed extra time to loft the pass deep. One illegal formation came against the Packers and did not look bad to me because from our angle his helmet seemed to be far enough forward but a penalty is a penalty. The illegal formation against the 49ers made him take the bench for the 2nd half of the game. The announcers discussed an interesting note about illegal formation that I didn't know; they will usually give you one warning about lining up too deep from the line of scrimmage and then the next one will getcha. That may be why Spags benched Barron, because back to back weeks he had the illegal formation call and if he got warned both times, that really could have been 4 penalties. The false start came on 1st down after the Saints had fumbled the ball out of the endzone for a touchback. It wasn't really a drive killer, the run and pass for a loss that followed the penalty did that.

Barron allowed 2 sacks in the 3 games I watched, both against the Saints. The first sack came on 2nd and 10 at the NO 24, the Rams down 7 - 0 in the 1st. On this play, Barron had Will Smith blocked fine but a collapsing right side of the line forced Bulger to scramble up and to the left practically right into his arms. The other sack was similar coming on 2nd and 5, 2nd quarter at SL 41, Rams down 14 -7. Barron was lined up RT and had Charles Grant blocked fine but two players ran right past the LG, almost like he didn't know which one to block so didn't block either. Bulger tried to scramble between the RG and RT to get some yards avoiding a sack but ran right into Grants arms. The formation was interesting because it was TE LG C RG RT RT.

A few things stuck out at me when watching Barron; obviously I am watching a 3 game window so my analysis may be much different than a Rams' fan. First, in my opinion Barron was their best pass blocker. On the sacks, hits or pressures that he gave up, most were the result of the QB stepping up in the pocket due to pressure along the line. Second, they flipped him between RT and LT frequently throughout each game and he was equally good at both positions. I have never seen a team move a tackle so much. Third, he is more of a screen blocker in the running game than a drive blocker most likely because he does get kind of high in his stance. They tended to run away from his side or ran delays so he could just seal off the DE. Interesting thing, even though he was so high in his stance, he really didn't give that much ground most of the time but he didn't gain much either. *Fourth, it looked like Barron was pointing out blocking assignments to the RG, TE and FB on some plays. This usually came on plays when they would sneak up a LB, S or a DB would start coming off the WR. Usually you see the center point these things out but I didn't see it in these games.

Judging from the 3 games I watched, I would have no problem with Barron protecting our QB. The running game is another issue but maybe running drills with a tarp over his head and a little time in the weight room might fix it.

* Addition edit

thank you dallasfaniac -- that was a nice original analysis of Barron's performance. Sounds like he will be a solid addition for the O-line.

I am liking this trade the more I like hear about it. With a better line overall and a much more mobile QB, Barron could be a valuable tackle for years to come.

I think he was told he'd be given a chance to compete at OT. Obviously Free is the guy I'm sure Jerry & co would prefer, but he'll still have to outperform Barron in camp/preseason.
