Adam Jones was released, so he doesn't count.

After Zach Thomas signed with the Chiefs to give us more free agent losses than gains, AdamJT13 said we should be in line for a third or fourth round compensatory selection next year.

comp picks dont work that way,
1st you have to say, take the players you signed in free agency;
a. igor ollansky, b. keith brooking

2. now, add up players you lost in free agency;
chris canty, tank johnson, joe ot/og to miami, burnett, zach thomas (zach didnt sign for much money, so might not get anything there)

3. then you compare the salaries your free agency guys you lost to the salaries of players you signed, then you subtract that,

4. as i understand it, if keith davis signs with someone then we get another comp pick with the comp pick for canty, at least thats what adam our salary cap guru said;

so right now, adam said, we should get like a 3rd for canty, and have to wait to see if we get anything for burnett;

hope that helps you somewhat, but main thing just ask adam when he has the time

Comp picks are affected when Unrestricted Free Agents sign with other teams. Released players such as Brad Johnson, Adam Jones or Roy Williams have no bearing.

Here are the players who could affect that calculation. It depends on their contract and performance.

Chris Canty, Giants
Kevin Burnett, Chargers
Joe Berger, Dolphins
Keith Davis, UFA
Brooks Bollinger, UFA
Carlos Polk, UFA
Tony Curtis, Chiefs
Zach Thomas, Chiefs
Tank Johnson, Bengals
Paul Palescu, UFA

Here are the players we have signed who could cancel out losing one of those players.

Keith Brooking
Igor Olshansky
Matt Stevens
Gerald Sensabaugh

So as it stands right now the best we can hope for is 2 Comp picks and that is assuming the contracts and performance will qualify. I suspect we will end up with 2 or 3 for 2010.

They don't award 2nd round comp picks. comp picks start after round 3.

Ohh your right. I thought I remembered the Pats getting a 2nd comp for Asante. I'll still gladly take a 3rd and 4th from those two though.

I thought I remember Adam saying that we might get a 3rd or 4th round Comp pick for Canty/Burnett mainly, IF we cut Brooking before or at mid-point of season only. BUT, that might have changed with Zach signing in Kansas, and Tank signing elsewhere. Roy Williams was cut, so I don't think his signing does anything. I'm surprised Zach and Tank affect comp pick calculations in any way though, as they are and were unrestricted free agents right, and never drafted (or does that make a difference) by the Cowboys in the first place, unlike Canty and Burnett.

I might be totally off, but aren't comp picks there to soften blow of draft picks you groomed leaving for (usually) more bucks and going elsewhere, and the comp picks helps you replace those draft picks and not free agents taking another turn as mercenaries. A bit of a newb on this subject I admit.

Hostile is right, they dont award 2nd draft picks as comps
Only starting with 3rd rounders;

so if we can get a 3rd and 4th id be tickled pink; hopefully we can get a 3rd, and fourth and fifth.
