Was just thinking to myself here...

With the league being full of parity and games going down to the wire, I was wondering why Kicker Salaries have not skyrocketed. Seems like they would be in a position to demand alot more money because so many teams could use a quality kickers.

Thoughts?

if they get anything over room, board, and coach tickets they ought to be happy.

Any meal money above McDonalds costs is a bonus. Then again, so is not having to fly in the baggage compartment.

And for every miss they take away a McNugget from their happy meal or take away the toy :laugh1:

Well, we certainly found out what it was like not to have a reliable kicker.
For all those whinning about Hoffman being gone- why was he not coaching with a team if he was so great? He did come up with a couple of good kickers, but a whole load of duds like Cundiff mostly. His batting average was pretty low- so that is why he is still not working. We have not had a real good kicker in years- hopefully we can get one for next season.

Vinatieri is worth some bucks, maybe even Vanderjagt.

Funny Hos. I hate leaving the game in the hands of a kicker. Lats night was watching Penn State and they had 1st down on the 12 at the end of game and just ran 3 times straight into the pile to get FS to use up TO's, then bring a freshman kicker on the field and he misses. I would have liked to see them try for the TD, use the kicker as last resort only.

Having said that, i do think salaries are going to go up for kickers, at least the real good ones. you'll probably have the few great kickers making good money, and then all the rest of them fighting to keep a spot in the nfl.

Being serious and actually answering the question.

The main reason kicker's salaries are not astronomical is because other player salaries escalated so much that teams started offering kickers less to compensate for paying other positions more. There are always exceptions who get paid a lot, but they are few and far between and the gap isn't likely to close that much.

Players hate the kickers as it is. Combine that with a high salary and it would be potentially combustable. In other words, superstar players wouldn't stand for it.

In a cap era teams are going to balance the money to pay a high price kickers versus anyone they can throw out there who can do the job. It's about economics.

Because no other team in the league even carries a kicking coach.

Good thoughts.

I wouldnt mind seeing us devote more resources to the kicking game.

I think you need to devote some more money/late round draft picks to good kickers. (I'd rather burn a 7th rounder on a solid kicker that's gonna be around awhile than some niche guy that is a 20-1 shot at even making the team)

You can also use them as a crutch if they're "too" good. Sounds stupid but...

When the Saints had Morten Anderson, instead of going for it on a 4th and 1 or whatever and possibly eventually getting a TD, they'd automatically line up for a FG cause they knew he never missed.
