See this above picture of Shockey? Above his left elbow is a little wrap of some sort, and I see this same thing all over the NFL. Why do they wear this?

It has nothing to do with elbow protection. Is it some kind of "sweat stopping" thing? What purpose is it? And you can see the other player next to Shockey has it on his arms too.

It just looks like to me it has no purpose at all. Any explanations from you football players?

it's either a sweat band or sometimes it's used to help keep a tendon from popping out of place.

Mainly it's just for looks.

I thought you were going to ask why Cowboys wear green pants.:D

I asked this question about a year ago, and never got a serious answer. I just concluded that no body else knew either. Maybe someone will know the answer.

Yeah, maybe it is just for looks?

I see other NFL players wear them, and some of those "wraps" are even more skinnier than the one that Shockey has on!

At first I was thinking that it was to prevent sweat from running down the arm, but that makes no sense, does it? I mean, the whole freaking arm will sweat!!

Hostile, what do you say?

It's a cotton sweat band. Some players believe it keeps sweat out of the crook of the elbow where the ball gets tucked away and thus makes it harder to strip the ball because one end isn't sweaty.

I have no idea if this is pure superstition or if it really works. When I played I never tried it. I taped fingers and wrists. Never used sweat bands. I felt they made me sweat more. Again, I have no idea if that (my reason) is pure superstition or if it really worked. Other guys wear long sleeves or gloves for the same reason, to keep sweat out of contact with the football.

If you believe something works, go for it. I know a guy who only ate chicken on game days. Even after the games were over. Nothing but chicken. It worked for him.

its actually a cut up wrist bad. Lot of times some players go really thin with them and have a band just thick enough to go around the logo.

Watch for em in a college game. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.

I wore them when I played CB and WR in high school, it keeps sweat from rolling down your forearms so when you run with the ball it doesnt pop out as easily

They're called "bicep bands"

According to the Nike website: http://www.nike.com/index.jhtml?l=nikestore,pdp,_pdp,gid-110404/pid-110403
Gun flaunters. Show off great guns with these 1" sweat stoppers.

** Dri-FIT wicks away moisture for quick evaporation.

** Added spandex ensures easy on and off.

** Embroidered Swoosh adds authenticity.

** 1" width.

** Fabric: 96% nylon/4% spandex. Imported.

There's also another thing I've seen recently, which is more like a rubber band type thing that people wear jut above the elbow. What is that supposed to be for?

My hunch is to make the wearer look more muscle bound. See what happens when I attach simple colored string to my rather ordinary looking arms:

Thanks everyone...that is some interesting things. It always had me confused because it just looks like it has little value, but, perhaps it does help the inner elbow as Hostile mentioned and also from sweat running down the arm...I guess.

That's it right there. When those first started appearing, about 4-5 years ago, they had a semi-tacky, velcro-like surface to them, on the side that faced out. The league put the kibosh on those.

I heard Drew Pearson asked about these at a charity event year before last. Pearson was the league rep assigned to the Cowboys regarding uni violations/policies through last year.
