He looks timid making tackles.
I don't know... just responding to the question with what Ive seen and read.

Wow, I guess with such instant great analysis by reading something on net/paper, we don't need scouting anymore or guys who have seen this guy play.

I think it goes beyond his physical evaluation. Both Watkins and Cromartie, for that matter, went to the same HS. They both went to Lincoln High, right there in Tallahassee. I can tell you for a fact that both of these guys were recruited heavily by Florida State from day one and that both enjoyed a very spoiled and relaxed atmosphere. In short, they were both caddled. As a result, both of them (IMO) have developed some bad habbits on the football field. I don't want to say there soft but I do think it's a fair statement to say that both of them felt as if it was almost owed to them to be on the field. Work ethic for both of these players has been a issue, in relation to football. Both are exceptionally gifted athletes but, both need to put in the work to get better. It won't be a given any longer. Now there going to have to put out and I just don't know that every team in the NFL believes that Watkins can or will do that.

You know RCF I have no idea where some of these fans pull their freakin points-of-view out of... It's like they graduated from "Archie Bunker High".

FS's are a dime a dozen, and most teams don't spend high draft picks on one.

We got him where he deserved to be chosen.

It's like taking a FB high in the draft ... you don't do it. Pro Bowl FB's and FS's are easily found in the 6th round and below.

Ahem! Exacly.

More and more teams are looking at top safeties. But the key is not just the position it is the player playing the position. If teams feel you have great talent then they will go after you high in the draft regardless. I admit I get a kick out of some of the comments about the different position and how some think some of the position don't take much talent to play it.

I admit. I get a kick out of reading people post that the 2TE set formation is something new this year.

LOL!

I agree here though. Every position is important; and it's especially important if you're team is weak at that position.

Keith Davis is OK, but he got beat a few times last year and cost us. It will be nice to have an upgrade as far as speed and coverage ability. He could be a liability on the run though... so Keith Davis will probably start for a while and, IMO, will end up being the starter for most of the year.

In passing situations, though, I expect Watkins to get involved early in the regular season.

We upgraded our pass coverage ability with Watkins though. Doing that in the 5th round could be considered a "steal" though.

The thing about a player's weaknesses is the scheme a team runs can often mitigate another team's ability to expoit them.

I don't think we're asking Watkins to be a headhunter on defense or line up against WRs with regularity. I think all we want is someone who can make tackles reliably, chase down a few ball carriers, cover some TEs/RBs and play zone and centerfield. Last year's FS starter was only good a laying the wood but really failed miserably in most other aspects of the job.

Watkins is probably more of a project than some of us want to admit. I highly doubt he starts this year at FS. He needs a year in the weight room and some time working on his technique with Bowles. Marcus Coleman should be a reasonable player tutor for him given that he is also a bit of a tall FS. I like his chances to be the starter in 2007 which is still pretty good for a 5th rounder.

Really, with players ability decided by one quarter to making judgements on their character/willingness by reading something or watching pictures, the fans on this board seem to be something real special :D

People seem to hung up about his ability to lay devastating hits, and his ability to play in the box. Who cares if he can play in the box? He wont be doing that anyway. Williams will. HE's a center field type player. And if he can't start right away, Coleman gives us that stop gap, especially because Watkins can play ST so well

I agree. Our team always said that our safties were interchangable, I think that was due to the fact that no one was really totally trusted to be deep and Roy had the best ball skills back there. This year, I think with more options, Roy WILL be closer to th eline, and will make a huge difference. Coleman or Watkins would be an upgrade in center field. Period.

Just to sum up the thread...

Positives: Pat Watkins can do it all. He has no faults, and if you manage to dig one up then you are being overly dramatic or just making stuff up. He's a great tackler. Great playmaker. Phenomenal in coverage.

Negatives: NFL scouts and GM's (aka "so called experts") didn't like Watkins because he was too big and too fast.

I don't know why he fell to the 5th round. Maybe he flew under the radar playing for a small program and it was hard to get film on him.

Florida State?

He does have a few off field incidents in his past but then again, so does everybody who goes to FSU.

Sure everyone wants to focus on the positives - and everyone is desperate for a talented FS so I think that is part of the hype.

On another note though, many people I saw had Watkins as there choice for the 3rd round pick, so I can see why they are excited.

People got blasted for posting Florida St. fans views of Watkins up here yesterday like that was some bad thing, "they are Florida St. fans, what are they going to say" type of comments.

Then we have Zoners who watched him play alot and are excited about his talent level.

That is just terrible stuff to post:rolleyes: We are just terrible homers I guess for looking at the positives, especially when there are no highlight flms of the negatives for us to see.

Everyone knows he is not first round talent, so give them a break.

Obviously a lot of fans, who know a great deal about football, are not even close to the level of a scout and knowing how college skills will translate to the NFL, but we do it every year, excitement about draft picks that is - and we definately NEED a good FS and thus more hype.

So stop slamming people for looking at the positives - there will be plenty of bashing on the negatives once he starts playing - it all evens out in the end!!:laugh2:

I onl saw him a few times, so not much to go by. But he did lay a lick on a guy in one game. I suspected he may have tackling problems with his odd size, but he did good from what I saw.

I saw him close in on a receiver with real good speed while playing in the middle of the field.

Looked good from what I saw, but maybe I missed his "sissy" days :p:
