Wanted to throw this out to those who do a lot of draft scouting and might have an insight. NOT trying to stir up controversy, and I'm not suggesting we should have gone the other direction. Just wondering.

Why did we draft Chapas instead of Hynoski to play fullback? I know Hynoski wasn't a world beater, and we ended up with Fiametta. I also understand that Hynoski went undrafted, so it's not like he was some highly sought after prospect. But when we decided to draft Chapas, what made the difference?

Cowboys liked Chapas.

Maybe this comment in his draft profile made the differance
" Gives quality effort on special teams. Smart in the classroom, team leader, hard worker, tough. "

The team's draft minds have a way of thinking they've outsmarted 31 other teams come draft day, at times. Most of the time it's a disaster but sometimes it works out.

A LOT of fans were high on Hynoski, Chapas came out of the blue. Obviously the team thought more of Chapas, but most draft analysts (professional and amateur) would have said Hynoski was the better prospect.

using the 18th pick in the 7th rd I don't think Dallas was trying to outsmart anyone.

What does the round have to do with it? 7th round doesn't matter?

Late rd picks tend to by longshots to begin with. Taking a guy who you may like based on certain attributes it not uncommon around the league heck there is not a 7th rd pick who does not have a lot of question marks on them in terms of talent.

FB was an area we needed to bring guys in and Dallas took a flyer on Chapas. We will find out if this pans out or not but I don't see his selection as trying to outsmart anyone

this is the problem when you have 25 people giving you input (as JJ stated) and you yourself ("the person that breaks the tie") are a football idiot

if 10 people are saying one thing and 15 another and you have no way of determining who is right or wrong

None of that really changes my point. Nearly everyone would have told you Hynoski was the better FB prospect, the team choose to go with someone else for their own reasons which probably means they felt they knew better than all the opinions to the contrary.

How is that not what I described? The round is irrelevant, they've done it in earlier rounds as well.

I mean we're talking FB here, it's not like they every fly off the board. to even be draftable, chances are you were probably pretty good in college.

when it comes to 7th rd picks there are alot of opinion out there I don't see where the 2 graded out that much different from each other.

Okay, well it's not worth arguing over. That's fine.

Your right it is not worth arguing over. I don't see the big differances between the 2

Well I think Hynoski was the better blocker at the time, and still is.

Maybe because Chapas was thought to be a better ST player?

It is what it is, at least we found a good fullback in Fiammetta

Exactly. A good example is we thought we could possibly outsmart everyone by taking Carl Lewis in the 12th round in 1984. There were probably a few teams who were wondering why they didn't think of that.

Hos is going to be really fired up about this one.

He pimped Hynoski hard. John Conner too.

It may just be a case where they valued leadership and/or intelligence over tenacity or production or what have you. As a general policy, that's ok. It may mean missing on some players, but hopefully, when you hit enough over time, you end up raising the quality of players on your roster.

I like Fiametta more than either of them, though, and hope that, whatever we do, we keep bringing in competition all around the roster and upgrade liberally when players push starters for time.

I think that decision in selection is sometimes watered in the draft room by comparison to qualities of former players at the position...and not on strained specifics of the player selected. It is a comparison upward, but back to a specific player....not job description alone.

It's a tough question. You have to factor in things like upside, character and overall contribution.

I'd like to think Dallas selected Chappy for his leadership and upside; I hope it's not because he can play STs!

If I'm drafting a FB, it won't be because he's some grand leader.

I don't need to have King Leonidas for a FB.

Just give me someone who can block his *** off and catch an occasional pass out of the backfield.

I'm sure all those things factor in including special teams.

True but part of having the leadership mindset is it also tends to show a guy who is a self motivator and one who will strive at improving himself as a player.
