Ok here is my question for the football experts, on HBO hardknocks, they showed a Todd Lowber fixing to run on the field on a special teams play, he took a few steps, then someone said get off the field. Lowber got off the field, then the special teams coach comes up and says something to the effect that there were just 10 men on the field, I didnt get with you in time enough, thats my fault, Reid said. If you listen somewhere between all of that on the blown special teams goof up, you can hear Wade Phillips say something like what the H... but Phillips did use the word He..
My question is this, isnt the special teams coach suppose to have his guys ready at all times. To me, that is showing lack of attitude by the special teams coach, if he messes up like that, no wonder the special teams mess up. There were remarks at the end of last year, that several players questioned the special teams coaching by the special teams coach. DO WE REALLY HAVE A PROBLEM THERE? AND WADE CANT SEE IT, REMEMBER WAY BACK WHEN PHILLIPS WAS THE HEAD COACH IN BUFFALO HE WOULDNT FIRE THE SPECIAL TEAMS COACH OR DISCIPLINE HIM AND THE OWNER FIRED PHILLIPS FOR NOT DOING SO.
We all know how jerry jones has stated that the special teams should be a ton better, with the talent and speed on those units now. So, what is the problem, and what do you fans think needs to be done. I do know I asked something along this line to jacquee taylor and he said if the special teams play is bad after the Denver game Saturday that Taylor will find out what is wrong, write up about it, etc.

I'll just throw this out there from Galloway's column on the subject .....

One guy bluntly said, "The longer Wade coaches there, the worse his teams [special teams] will be. I think you will see that."

OK, I can’t give you the numbers from Buffalo and Denver (didn’t do the research) to validate that statement, but the opinion came from an ST coach with outstanding credentials.

Some coaches emphasize special teams, some don't. Wade appears to take the latter approach.

bbgun brought up the point that Galloway talked to Avezzano for the column, but that Avezzano didn't want to be quoted and criticize a fellow special teams coach, or something like that.

But this anonymous quote pops up in there and my first thought was that it came from Avezzano. Could be.

A preseason game where you are swapping scrubs in and out of the different coverage/return units from kick to kick is a different scenario than a regular game.

In comparing BP and Phillips:

BP always talked about his roster and how ST's were a big part of his roster decisions. I don't listen to Phillips PC's but it seems that he may have more of an attitude of get the best players for the positions and then worry about ST's afterward.

I think that is why Reeves and Nate Jones lasted as long as they did here in Dallas amd why Davis was signed for a sizeable amount the year NO was trying to get him.

...typically walks up and down the sideline on third down to prepare those guys to take the field for 4th. That's your job because many teams choose their specialists from not only the back ups, but also players from 1st team offence and defence.

There can be alot of confusion on the transition to 4th down or after scoring play so the coach usually gets the guys ready and reminds those coming off the field to get back on their special teams assignmment.

Special teams are typically high intensity units who know they only get a few shots during the game to make a play. Attention to detail and intensity is what a person brings to the table as a coach.

Most good special teams coaches work hard to make game changing plays from their units. That's how you get noticed. That's why you often see them fighting for better talent on their squads.

You pay the bills with stats on field position, return yards for, downed punts inside the the 10, FG percentage, but you get the money for TDs on returns, FG percentage beyond 50 yards, specialty plays such a onside kicks and return yards against your coverage teams.

Specialty teams may only cover at most 5 minutes a game. To get noticed you have to find the house. Either by ground or the air via a foot.

Now that is scary... Considering it is already the weak link on the field.

So if our ST units are weak and hurt us in every game...can we overcome them to win the SB? Or will we have to wait until Jason Garrett takes over to see this unit turn around and help us win a SB?
