Who is your favorite character, and why?

Mine is is Snape. I think he is a phenomenal actor and his brooding character is just so well done. I think my all time favorite scene is in "Goblet of Fire" where Ron and Harry are talking about finding dates and he keeps whacking them in the head.

He's kind of dark, extremely complicated because of that, and he dominates the scenes he shares.

Not sure why, but Luna Lovegood. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that she has zero acting experience, she read the book, thought of how that character would act, came in for an open call, and got the part. She's exactly how I saw her from reading the one book in the series that I did read.

Dumbledore. He was aloof and powerful, yet extremely protective and unpretentious at the same time. His character literally sacrificed himself to help defeat Lord Voldemort. I was afraid that the character would lose some of its aura after Richard Harris died. Michael Gambon has not only kept Harris' protrayal top notch--he improved upon it as well.

Books: Sirius Black. Didn't like the portrayl of him on the screen though.

Movies: Voldemort. Fiennes is one of my favorite actors and he nails the role perfectly.

I also enjoy Hagrid quite a bit.

Are you talking about the movies or the books?

In the movies, I think Snape has been tremendously under-developed. In the books, he's a huge, monumental character. Perhaps the second-most important character after Harry. In the movies, he's background.

In general in the movies the characters are under-developed... Snape more than most because he's such a hugely complex person in the development of the story... but it's hard to really get to know any of the characters outside of the big three in the movies.

For the most part the actors are phenomenal, and do a great job of getting as much as they can across with the amount of time they are allotted.

Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix adds more to the character than I think you get in the books, and that's quite an accomplishment.

I never really liked Sirius as a character in the books much, but Gary Oldman is such a great actor, I think he improves the character.

In the books, I think Ginny is really underrated. She's very under the radar in the movies, but in the books she really has a lot of character. You get the sense that she's one of the most powerful magicians of all the students at Hogwarts, she's very independent and fiery. So I guess, outside of the obvious choices, she'd be my favorite Potter character.

Agreed with Bellatrix. Helena IS Bellatrix, and I don't know who would even be a close second.

For some reason, I always thought Ginny might be the one person to betray everyone. She seemed as you said, overly powerful, flighty, and had fallen under Voldemort's power once before. Perfect candidate to stick the knife in someone's back at some point, and take the path of Bellatrix.

Another person that seemed like they might play a larger roll is Ron's oldest brother Percy. Having only read one of the books, I don't know what total roll he has, but it seemed like he was going to be an intriguing player somewhere down the road. I had envisioned him playing a roll somewhat like Barty Crouch Jr.

alan rickman is an absolute genius, says more with a look than a lot of actors could with a minute of dialogue.

I always like my women with brains. Hermione is good looking brave and smart. Best and most well rounded charactor in either the books or movies.

The original Die Hard was the first movie which I recall seeing Rickman play in. I have been a fan of his work ever since.

In the books I like the Weasley twins as they crack me up. They are smart but would rather play. Yet they turn that into a thriving business after they basically gave the bird to the professor who was the mouthpiece of the ministry and took over the school.

In the movies...Jason Issacs (sp?) who played Mr. Malfoy. Sadly he only played small parts in the early movies but was perfect for the role. I like snape in the books and movies as well although they short change him in the movies.

I agree that in the books the Weasley twins are a riot. It comes out in the movies, but not as much as the books.

I also agree with the poster about how well Helena Bonham Carter plays Bellatrix. She steals scenes as usual.

Gotta be Snape in both the books and the movies. Great character in the books, even better when portrayed by Rickman.

Helana Bonham Carter is an example of an actress who has worked at her craft and has gotten better over the years. She was lousy when she was younger.

There have been some fringe characters that I really liked. Mad Eye Moody is a great example. I also liked Gilderoy Lockhart and Dolores Umbridge.

I enjoyed Dobby as well. I think without a doubt though my favorite fringe character has been Luna. She is so quirky you can't help but enjoy her.

i thought that bit at the end where dobby was talking about how happy he was to be there with harry was quite tear jerking. his friendship with harry was the most important thing in his life while harry never really gave much thought to him, was well addressed by his refusal to use magic.

I have seen Alan Rickman in other movies but it wasn't until I saw him in Galaxy Quest (yes that parody of a movie) that I fully appreciated his acting skills. His portrayal of Snape has been outstanding and very impressive.

I'll have to disagree with DallasEast about Dumbledore's portrayal in the movie. Dumbledore was very passive and docile in the books except at certain key moments when he would rise up to take charge or confront a situation. It was because he was so calm that when he would show an emotional outburst, it startled everyone around him and made them focus completely on his words.

The original Dumbledore actor was more true to the book in that sense. The current Dumbledore expresses his emotions a lot more often even in casual situations which makes those intense moments less unique and meaningful. I am not insulting the current actor's acting ability, but rather the way he is choosing to portray the character.
