Question for the board... MVP...

What's the definition of MVP?...

I was listening to ESPN yesterday and they had someone on who gave his 3 top MVP candidates...

Peppers, LT and Manning...

It got me thinking what exactly are the criteria for selecting an MVP?...

Is it the stats?...

Winning games?...

Effect on a team?...

I would think changing the fortunes of your team and having a direct impact on it's success in a season...

Peppers is putting up good numbers but not about to break the sack record for a season and his team is mediocre...

Manning is really a great player to watch but he always puts up good stats...

And LT is something else...Great numbers, the possibility of breaking a record and his team is winning games with a 2nd year QB...

Therefore, while he probably wouldn't hold up next to LT this season, IF and that's a BIG IF, Romo continues his progress, we're winning games, and his passer rating is still first or second, shouldn't he AT LEAST be given some consideration?...

Or am I being too much of a homer?...

I do think Romo will get some play, but not enough because he did not start all the games.

If the MVP this year is anyone besides LT I will faint.

It varies....many people justify selecting someone other than the clearcut best player in whatever league by saying it needs to be the guy who is the most valuable to his team, which means he needs to be on a winner.

I always think of the MVP as the best player in the league, the guy whom every team would trade anyone on their roster for to get him (possibly), the guy you'd chose given your choice of any player in the NFL to start a new franchise with.

In baseball, it would seem to now be Albert Pujols, but he was hurt for over a month, and Ryan Howard won because he put up better stats in almost every category except batting average. The Phillies didn't even go to the playoffs, yet Howard won. Even as a huge Cardinals and Pujols fan, I have no problem with that because in baseball, it is indeed about stats since everyone has them.

IN football, a defensive player can win it if he's all-world like LT, but it's very very difficult.

Clearly, all homerism aside, there is no one on the Cowboys, even if we win a superbowl, who deserves the MVP this year. I personally eliminate our only contender, Romo, because he didn't even play the whole year...not his fault, but sorry.

I think you will see that the only two players that any coach in the NFL would choose to start a franchise with tomorrow would be Peyton Manning or Ladainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson should win it this year because people are tired of Manning not winning the SB, even though it's not his fault, and because when you are a superstar player like Tomlinson, you win it in the year you set NFL records.

I love Romo, but there have been players in the history of the NFL who were 1 year wonders or short timers. Even the Cowboys would probably trade Romo for the proven Manning or Tomlinson at this point in his career.

Unless someone gets injured, the MVP is already in the bank. Tomlinson wins the award, and Peyton Manning will finish second. Julius Peppers is unlikely to get any votes unless it's a vote from his own team. Romo will get no votes, not even from the Cowboys who don't want to look foolish over an MVP vote by voting for a first year player.

I'm sure we'll see some anti-Manning posts on this subject, but they are foolish...every coach and gm in the NFL that I've ever heard of recognizes Manning as far and away the best QB on any team, championship or not. The Colts haven't missed a SB because Manning had a bad game or couldn't put up points or misreads defenses. They've missed at times because they had a lousy defense and last year because they couldn't protect Manning. Put Manning behind some of the OL's in the league, with some of the running games in the league, alongside some of the defenses in the league, and you'd see a guy who would have won some SB's by now, imo.

Am award a Dallas player is legitimately in the running for is Comeback Player of the Year.

And that would be Columbo, of course.

Brees will get it as he is having a Pro Bowl year as the QB on a resurgent (in more ways than one) team.

But no player (to my knowledge) this year has come back from the kind of physical 'finality' as MC, regained a starting position on a winning team, and performed as consistently. The time length diff (duration of recovery and obvious degree of seriousness) between Brees' injury (and even Pennington's, who is another candidate) and Columbo's render them significantly different.

It's M-Valuable-P. Not best player. I'm a homer too but if the Cowboys finish very strong, his stats stay similar to what they are, they win their division etc. etc. how could you make a case for anyone EXCEPT Romo. His play completely turned his team around. The Cowboys would be in the 6-6 pack hoping to make the playoffs with Bledsoe and maybe worse.

Well LT is the MVP and the BEST player in the league. He has the stats and his team has the wins. Sure Romo has sent us on a winning streak, but the Chargers are 10-2, and they have a longer winning streak going than we do.

The Cowboys without Romo would be like 5-7 or 6-6 right now. The Chargers without LT would be AWFUL. Just look at the rest of their personnel... They have Gates who is arguable the best TE in the business, and HE'S HAD A DOWN YEAR!!

Their WRs are mediocre, their QB is a decent player, but he hasn't had a Romo-like impact. Michael Turner could come in and run the ball, but he's not a game changer.

LT is the MVP and it's not close.

But I'll take a Super Bowl MVP from Romo :D

So true... LT is more deserving of the league MVP than any other player, hands down. Plus, I'd like to see him break Alexander's TD record by a few as well.

Back in 2001, I was hoping that the Cowboys would do something... ANYTHING, to land the opportunity to get LT... I absolutely knew this guy would be a once in a lifetime football player. But noooo, Jerry had to have a small, fast, injury prone WR. The rest is history

I would list Romo as one of the candidates for MVP simply because he is the most valuable palyer for his team right now. Without him the team would be in a different spot right now. Yes, individual stats do matter and LT is having a great year, but if you can take LT out of the team you are not sure and can't say that the Chargers wouldn't be here without him. Yes he is a great player and he has alot to do with their success, but is he the only reason why they are where they are now? Who knows how Rivers would have played with out him.

With that being said, the NFL is not here to be fair or antying like that, they are here to make money. LT without a doubt is going to break the record for the TDs and he will be crowned the MVP because he can market the NFL better right this minute.

After giving it to Shaun last year, I agree that giving it to anyone other than LT would be a mistake. He really is the best back I've seen since Barry. Complete package.

Now in all honesty, I disagree with LT being the "money" pick over Romo. Romo's quickly becoming a true media superstar; if you turn it on any tv sports station in America, they're talking Romo. (Jersey sales, etc) Romo as MVP would be the "sexy" pick IMO - America's team, Cinderella story, etc.

But LT truly deserves it.

LT might be the best player in 2 decades in the NFL. And he's helping that team win with ease.

LT no doubt.

But Romo should be mentioned - he is very important for us.
