Agreed. I had remembered he played with Roger longer than he did. But looking it up, he was a rookie in Staubachs final season, and I don't remember if he even played much that season. He was definitely Danny's security blanket going forward.
And of course who can forget that Hogenbloom-to-Cosbie chemistry.

He was better than average, but no where near Novacek and Witten in my opinion.

He is a lot like Dwight Clark to me. Both are tall and could catch anything. A very good football player.

He was very good but not great -- not equal in level to Witten or Novacek but I'd say significantly better than average within his own category. Not as complete a TE as Witten nor quite as productive offensively as Novacek, imho.

Although the tight end position wasn't utilized back then as it is now - before Cosby was Billie Joe Dupree and he was no slouch either.
Speaking of Billie Joe - I saw a guy wearing his jersey in a sports bar last year in Vegas. It was pretty cool.

Sorry dexternjack I meant it with the utmost respect alot of the 70s and 80s games are popping up on YouTube I also loved those real white sidelines at old Texs Stadium

He was an outstanding pass catcher. Too bad we passed on Joe Montana, who was the highest rated player in our board in the third round, to grab him because of need in '79. Considering we had drafted Todd Christensen in the 2nd round a year earlier but we couldn't convince him to move to TE, that became a position of need. Of course we dropped Christensen and he went on to have a pro-bowl career with the Raiders. In my opinion this chain of events is what eventually led to the demise of Landry's Cowboys in the 80's. We had good teams but couldn't put the whole thing together to win a Super Bowl.

Younger fans must consider how the passing game has evolved for the franchise over the years since the 70s and 80s. Back then, more emphasis was placed on Cowboys tight ends blocking and catching short and intermediate passes. Cosbie was really good at both but wasn't quite as good as Billy Joe Dupree in that regard in my opinion. He and Dupree were three-time Pro Bowlers though--back in the day when being named to the Pro Bowl was much more of an honor. I remember Cosbie having pretty solid hands and good speed.

Cosbie was a very good route runner and had good hands. Not an inline blocker at all. At the beginning of his career, DuPree handled the blocking assignments, and Cosbie was on the field on passing downs. One of the more underrated and overlooked Cowboy players of his time.

Tex Schramm said that was the only time he was ever talked out of a player. They needed a good quality TE, and Tom Landry and Gil Brandt said...we have Danny White to take over for Roger, so we could use a TE over a QB....
Which reminds me also, about that same time, Danny White asked for a trade, as he wanted to QB and not punt anymore. Roger had supposedly talked him out of that and told him he was going to retire after the next season. So Danny stayed.

He was actually very comparable to Novecek, IMO. Jay had the advantage of playing with a better offense but to me, they were very much alike in a lot of ways.

Not on Witten's level though.
Just some trivia; Dallas took BPA back then in the draft and a guy named Joe Montana was as the top of their board when they picked Cosby. They had an almost retired Staubach, but Danny White waiting in the wings....so they went away from their draft philosophy.
