If useless, why is fishoil in high concentrations being prescribed as medication?
It was initially concluded after retrospective analysis of seafood-eating populations with preferred coronary profiles that the major biochemically important difference compared with avian and mammalian meat was the level of omega-3 fatty acids. These quickly became produced and marketed as rational supplements, over-the-counter, not subject to FDA control. In order to develop a more potent product, one company got theirs tested and approved by the FDA as safe and presumably effective.
Subsequently, a large multi-site long-term study on cardiac outcomes was conducted by the NIH.
A few months ago, the conclusion found no improvement in cardiac outcomes. There may be other factors which do make fish effective, but it is not the omega-3's by themselves.
Along the same lines, niacin has also shown to be relatively ineffective.
