Question for the weight lifters

If useless, why is fishoil in high concentrations being prescribed as medication?

It was initially concluded after retrospective analysis of seafood-eating populations with preferred coronary profiles that the major biochemically important difference compared with avian and mammalian meat was the level of omega-3 fatty acids. These quickly became produced and marketed as rational supplements, over-the-counter, not subject to FDA control. In order to develop a more potent product, one company got theirs tested and approved by the FDA as safe and presumably effective.
Subsequently, a large multi-site long-term study on cardiac outcomes was conducted by the NIH.
A few months ago, the conclusion found no improvement in cardiac outcomes. There may be other factors which do make fish effective, but it is not the omega-3's by themselves.

Along the same lines, niacin has also shown to be relatively ineffective.

This and many other studies say otherwise.

What this represents is one of several very small isolated studies that record mild increase in lipolysis and levels of free fatty acids after ingesting the equivalent of 5 cups of coffee. Problem is, the stimulation of increased heart rate and respirations can account for these metabolic changes, and the net body work increase is negligible. It also comes with significant cardiac risks, including arrhythmias.
The only safe way to generally increase metabolism is through minor thyroid manipulation or adrenergic augmentation, if warranted under a phydician's management.

Of course, we increase our metabolism temporarily with exercise.

High protein intake is hard on the kidneys, creatine is bad for the liver, excess vitamins are bad for both, fish oil has been proven to be useless, and steroids will shrink your gonads and increase cancer risk. And there are no substances that increase energy or burn fat.

It's best simply to eat lean meat, lots of green vegetables, fresh fruit with every meal, and whole grains and nuts daily.
Sodium , fats, and sugars should be limited, and have only 1 starch per meal (corn, beans, rice, potatoes, bread, pasta.).

The two strongest guys I've ever tested were lean and wirey.

You can't change your genetics.

I agree with your post here. Eat a balanced diet with some things in moderation (snacks, desserts, etoh, etc.). I do like to enjoy my food so i keep it balanced but i still eat the things i like in moderation.

I dont think all the extra protein that most weightlifters try to take translates into growing muscle strength and size at a faster rate. The muscle beraksdown at the wekest point and after the 48-72 hours heals stronger (assuming you havent injured yourself by tearing something at the joint or muscle itself). Its a process that is going to happen as long as you eat enough protein, but i dont see where it would change at all by eating more protein than you need. Your just eating extra calories.

Also true that high protein intakes can raise your BUN levels. Ive seen in in Tube fed patients that were receiving more than 1.5gm/kg protein. Reducing the protein intake returned the BUN to lower levels.

It seeme that everyone that starts weightlifting immediately hears from someone thay need to eat lots and lots of protein. I think its fine to increasing your intakes a little bit more once you start lifting and its great that people become more conscious of what they are eating as far as Carbs, fat, protein and other nutrients; but it seems like the protein craze and other supplements has gone to an extreme.

I am just getting back into lifting weights after a 10 year absence in the weight room. I was a power lifter and played football for from 5th grade to varsity.

But I would like to know what would you gym rats recommend for supplements, protein powder for shakes. Amino acids. or anything else you would recommend to pack on muscle mass and strength.

Btw... I haven't ruled out steroids.

I would give testosterone a go before resorting to steroids... You can easily get some online and I don't believe it is illegal. Shoot me a PM for more details.

I am a big proponent of Deer Antler Extract, it worked for me. Also, I take specifically crafted pre-workout, during workout, and post-workout supplements. Combined with eating right and a double dosage of men's multivitamins, I was able to triple my lifts (bench, arm curls, shoulder press, etc;) over 8 weeks last summer and have maintained the gains to this day. However, I was quite weak at the point I began due to not really working out since high school.

In the past when I've cut weight I have had massive success with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IQFMZRC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Testosterone is absolutely illegal and is the most widely used "steroid" by far. Deer Antler Extract is also garbage.

So much bad advice in this thread.

No substances that burn fat? I'm not a scientist but weren't beta agonists shown to have this potential?

Creatine bad for the kidneys?

Also, people that say "high protein intake is unnecessary" are usually the guys that don't have 17+ inch arms and abs you could wash your clothes on. No offense. I don't think most guys care about being "the strongest", they care about looking good with their shirt off while having actual muscles to show. You're not going to get there unless you're eating a lot of protein. Sure you can be healthy and strong and not eat a lot of protein, and also look like you run on the treadmill a few times a week, but who wants to look like that? I've never known one person, who wasn't chemically enhanced, that looked like the statue of David and didn't eat at least a 1g protein/1lb bodyweight.

Not hating, just the experience of a lowly gym rat.

Right, and I'm just posting from the experience of trying to deal with the health consequences of that vanity when you guys get old.

Ephedrine is not a beta agonist, and the study you reference on creatine is too small and of too short a duration to prove anything.
Come see me when you're 50.

Easy to obtain a prescription for, though I have never done so (I am 21.)

High-quality DAE actually works well, problem is most people get the garbage stuff. I was able to do an intense, exhaustive workout one day, and the next I could work out that muscle group again. I was doing full-body workouts every day and hiking up Camelback mountain every other day, with minimal muscle fatigue. Certainly wasn't good genetics, so I credit the DAE.
