Question for those old enough to remember Staubach's rookie year (compared to Henson)

While in the Navy, I think Staubach spent his two week leaves in the summer with the Cowboys. He threw the football almost every day on the carrier he was based on, I seem to remember. Even though he wasn't playing he wasn't "away" from the game mentally or throwing wise. He also had Tom Landry as his coach.

And despite all that, in 1970, the year they lost the Super Bowl, Pat Toomay had this to say about Staubach ("The Crunch", page 58):

The team was decidedly unsettled. The quarterback, Craig Morton, was getting over shoulder pain and could not throw without pain; the backup, Roger Staubach, had not yet assimilated the concept of "keying" (observing the opponents' defensive backfield) and was therefore not ready to play

So, if the best QB in Cowboys' history couldn't read a defense after owning the playbook for years, after having been on the team a whole season, then why do we expect miraculous perfection out of Henson now?

David.
