Yeah, Romo is tied for #1 for active QBs.

He is also tied for #2 ALL TIME... only behind Young.

Silly me, but I think he can raise that a bit this year and pull ahead of Payton.

And that's why I want to vomit whenever I see him bashed. You're bashing a QB that only 1 other QB has surpassed as far as rating in the history of the game. How soon such people forgot the QC years and what horrible QBing is truly like.

I don't know why people are against replacing Tony Romo. Quarterback success stories are a dime a dozen. Just look at Madden video games. They are the quintessential authority on professional football.

In them, anyone (and I dare say a-n-y-o-n-e) can take a no name player (literally/he only has a number as identification) and take Detroit all the way to the Super Bowl undefeated with 6,000... 7,000 or more passing yards, 80 TDs and two INTs.

You doubt all this? Fine, but remind yourself first of this little bit of profound wisdom...

If it's IN the game, it's IN the game.

The QB rating formula needs to be overhauled.
The YPA part needs to be made more important while % completed needs to be reduced in importance.
And I would add 3rd Down passes that make a first down %.

I never understand why people try so hard to discredit QB rating.

If you look at the list, extremely good QBs head it up. So whatever it actually is indicative of, there appears to be a strong correlation between a high QB rating and being an objectively good QB.

You don't see Chad Hutchinson on the top of that list. Nor Jason Campbell. Nor _______ (fill in the spare).

It shows something--irrespective of whether it is the best indicator--and that something is correlated to good QB.

Then some people act like an average QB can play some sneaky way to inflate his QB rating--and insinuate that Romo does so. Well, if that were the case, one woulld expect that many more superior QBs would inflate their QB rating more than Romo. If it is easy to have Romo's rating, then surely there would be a bunch in the history who have done it. Yet, nope. There he is. No. 2.

Whatever QB rating shows, it certainly shows that Romo is a top notch QB that deserves more respect than our butt-hurt fans give him.

Romo will never be a great QB until he plays well in December and gets a few more playoff wins. Right now he is just a very good QB who doesn't know how to win when it counts.

What is wrong with it is this:
Somehow it is thought that being at the top of the passer rating means you are a great QB.

Look at the all time list;
. Steve Young+ 96.8 1985-1999 2TM
2. Peyton Manning (32) 94.7 1998-2008 clt
Tony Romo (28) 94.7 2004-2008 dal
4. Kurt Warner (37) 93.8 1998-2008 3TM
5. Tom Brady (31) 92.9 2000-2008 nwe
Philip Rivers (27) 92.9 2004-2008 sdg
7. Joe Montana+ 92.3 1979-1994 2TM
8. Chad Pennington (32) 90.6 2000-2008 2TM
9. Drew Brees (29) 89.4 2001-2008 2TM
Ben Roethlisberger (26) 89.4 2004-2008 pit
11. Daunte Culpepper (31) 89.0 1999-2008 4TM
12. Carson Palmer (29) 88.9 2004-2008 cin
13. Jeff Garcia (38) 87.5 1999-2008 5TM
14. Jay Cutler (25) 87.1 2006-2008 den
15. Otto Graham+ 86.6 1946-1955 cle
16. Dan Marino+ 86.4 1983-1999 mia
17. Trent Green (38) 86.0 1997-2008 4TM
18. Donovan McNabb (32) 85.9 1999-2008 phi
19. Marc Bulger (31) 85.6 2002-2008 ram
20. David Garrard (30) 85.4 2002-2008 jax
Brett Favre (39) 85.4 1991-2008 3TM
22. Jake Delhomme (33) 85.1 1999-2008 2TM
23. Rich Gannon 84.7 1987-2004 4TM
24. Matt Hasselbeck (33) 84.5 1999-2008 2TM
25. Jim Kelly+ 84.4 1986-1996 buf
26. Mark Brunell 84.2 1994-2006 3TM
27. Roger Staubach+ 83.4 1969-1979 dal
28. Steve McNair 82.8 1995-2007 2TM
29. Brian Griese (33) 82.7 1998-2008 4TM
Neil Lomax 82.7 1981-1988 crd
31. Len Dawson+ 82.6 1957-1975 3TM
Sonny Jurgensen+ 82.6 1957-1974 2TM
33. Brad Johnson (40) 82.5 1994-2008 4TM
34. Ken Anderson 81.9 1971-1986 cin
35. Neil O'Donnell 81.8 1991-2003 4TM
Bernie Kosar 81.8 1985-1996 3TM
37. Danny White
So according to passer ratings Mark Brunnel, Matt Hasselback, Jake Delhomme and Trent Green are all better passers then Roger Staubach.
That is why as it currently is the passer rating is a joke.

Bradshaw isn't even on the list and he has how many rings?

Dan Marino, probably the purest passer in the game, 16?

Hmm...

When Roger retired only Otto Graham had a higher passer rating for his career. Now he is #27. Tell me that there have been 25 better then Roger in the last 30 years.

Of course not. That's ridiculous.

Passer rating is not absolute indication of how great a QB is.

But you are equally wrong to discredit it. It's an indication of something. And whatever that is, there is a strong correlation between high QB rating and being a great QB.

Steve Young? One of the best ever. Peyton Manning? Same.

You know who is not on the list of the highest QB ratings ever? Tavaris Jackson. Ryan Leaf. Joey Harrington. Kordell Stewart. Alex Smith. Etc, etc. Bad QBs = Bad QB ratings.

Being on the top of the QB rating list means you are a good QB. Bad QBs don't get up there.

Being "great"--whatever that terms means--requires consideration of a number of other factors such as success, clutch, etc.

So, high QB rating does not mean you are greater than someone with a lower rating. But high QB rating does mean you are a good QB and don't suck.

Romo is a damn good QB. The fact he has the 2nd highest career QB rating is proof of that fact.

Logic fail.

QB rating does not show who is better than who. QB rating shows if an individual QB is good or not. "Better" is a value judgment that requires other things; QB rating is a statistical judgment.

I think it's fair to use the rating to compare active players with other active players, but obviously you can't compare today's players with old timers because the game has changed so much.

Romo is tied for #1 for active players. I don't know if I'd call him the best, but I wouldn't trade him for any other QBs, not even Brady.
