to interview Rivera for the HC position, but then negotiate a DC position with Rivera before February 20th, could the Bears nix the deal (since they have a right to negotiate with him exclusively until Feb. 20th, as I understand)?

Or at the very least, would the Bears have the option to match our initial offer as a DC, and if they match our initial offer, they keep him?

I guess that if I were the Bears organization, and I was at least interested in keeping Rivera, and screwing the Cowboys, I would say that Rivera could only interview and be hired for the HC position (before Feb 20th). If we offer him the DC position BEFORE Feb. 20th, the Cowboys are in breach since the Bears have a window to exclusively reach an agreement with Rivera.

I think if we interview him as a HC, then offer him a very high salary as a DC, then Chicago would just let him go without a problem. They're not going to match. It would be pointless to just make everyone wait until Feb. 20 to make things official. In the mean time, we would go on as if Rivera was our DC.
