How much money will Jerry need to re-sign Jason Witten, Roy Williams, and Terence Newman? Realistically, what amount should Bill & Jerry keep handy so that they can sign some of these young guys who have built the new 21st century Cowboys?
If the Boys release Key, we're talking a huge amount of money the Cowboys will enter the season with! (Unless they are working on some deals we don't know about.)
Is there a prime free agent next year I don't know about? Will Witten, Williams, Newman, James and other young guys cost that much to sign again?
If resigning current stars is the objective here..and it's assuredly so..
..I'd say half of our cap maybe being set aside to do that with.
And some percentage of the cap is being held in reserve to sign any FA's that pop up on the radar after the first wave of FA is over and the Draft is done and the June cuts come and go.
That carves up the pie considerably.
I think many fans here just think that the increase of the cap and the cuts we have made are primarily some slush fund that is always to be used to find, new, sexy talent.
As your team gets better and your personnel improve, you have to keep them signed and out of bidding wars on the open market.
That's where we are right now.
We have to work on resigning players now with our big cap, not next Febuary.
That then leaves us with whatever cap cutting to come next year and a cap increase next year to go out and pickup some remaining players needed to complete the rebuilding.
I'm Ok with what is going on as long as important players are resigned by training camp and talks don't drag into the season where they will stall and we stand to lose some players we must retain.
Let's see where this all goes.
I'm hoping for peace and tranquility and harmony on the re-signing fronts with all this cap we have. And I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later.
That's why I can't understand all the excitement about signing TO and dumping huge amounts of our cap and bonuses at him.
Our core players waiting to hear from their team about new deals are going to point to any TO hemmorage of cash as being a benchmark to start ther new demands from.
Do we really want that..?
Give it deep thought, folks.
