My daughter wants to help the troops in Iraq. She wants to get a collection of items such as soap, shampooes, and such, which we take for granted everyday, to ship overseas.

The question being, does anyone know of an address that these items can be shipped to?

The kids at my church did this too. The item the soldier really liked was beef jerky because he could take it in his field pack on missions. Just passing that along.

The package going to any of our troops is a great thing and it is a wonderful thing that your daughter wants to do that.

People have provided very good links to sites that can help in her quest.

However have you considered finding a national guard unit in your state that is over there?

Find out if any in your state are currently over there and send it to your state's troops.

Another thing to try is to find local businesses to help donate some items. Many are willing to do so because it is a good thing but will also do so for good press.

We sent my cousins unit stuff all the time and my cousin said everyone was wanting some Mister B potato chips. They pretty much only make and distribute Mister B chips in our state and in some bordering sections of a couple of other states.

We went to the company and showed them the letter and asked if they were willing to donate some chips.

They donated a pretty large amount of chips. We did not tell them before hand that we would give them some press in order to get the chips. However after they donated them we contacted the local papers and told them of what the company was doing for the states troops. They had a nice article written up about it.

So...there are some suggestions. Another thing troops like is when a class of kids make some drawings or letters and send them. It is the small things that can put a smile on the troops faces.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I had planned to go by our National Guard Armory Monday to check with them.

She wants to get started by handing out flyers within our neighborhood and go from there. Although she had already made a flyer, I believe that she will add kids drawings and beef jerky to the list.

And you guys are right...I am a very proud Dad. Between her and my son, I'm pretty fortunate with the two that God gave me. Good thing they took after my wife. :D ;)

I'm heavily involved in a project, PM me if you need any help. It's much easier to go through an existing program than start your own.

Just remember that many items cannot be shipped without causing problems.

The National Guard angle is the best. As BP said, it allows you to add a local flavor be it potato chips, pretzels or any other local delicacy. If no local Guard units are currently active, the DoD will give you the units of local active duty personnel. It's a huge deal when one guy gets so many care packages that he's forced to share....makes him the most popular man in theater.

Far and away the most popular item is phone cards, followed surprisingly by letters. Letters with even the most mundane items take time to read and killing time is always a huge issue.

If foodstuffs are what you're looking at, beef jerky as Hos said is popular as are those little individual cereal boxes that come in the mixed eight packs. Don't try chocolate BTW, it tends to melts in transit.
