Before the week is over, the Cowboys will escape the sweltering Texas heat for Oxnard’s cool embrace.
But that doesn’t mean the heat will subside for a franchise that has failed to make the playoffs for three consecutive years.
Owner Jerry Jones vowed to make the off-season uncomfortable at Valley Ranch, and it was. While personnel changes were minimal, the coaching staff underwent an extreme makeover that yielded a new defensive scheme and a different offensive play caller for 2013.
Optimism will run higher than the 69-degree temperature that is expected to greet the team when it lands on California soil Friday afternoon. Before training camp breaks on Aug. 16, the Cowboys will take the practice field 38 times to help determine if that positive outlook is justified.
This franchise has plenty of questions to address before it returns home. The most pressing:

Four new starters have taken over in the offensive line since Jason Garrett became head coach in November of 2010.
