Questions and Concerns

http://cowboyszone.com/2017/01/questions-and-concerns.html

The season is over and I have to admit that it has taken me awhile to get over the loss. There have been a lot of questions about the coaches management of the game but I for one refuse to go with that story line. Fans have talked about the discrepancy of calls against the team but you should never leave the game up to the referees. The reality is that this game was winnable but the bend but don’t break defense finally broke. I don’t want to single out the defense not because it’s not deserved but because at this point it doesn’t matter and now is the time for the staff to take a breather before moving into draft preparations. One of the things that I learned from this loss is that the NFL waits for no man or fan, so we have to move on and that’s what I am going to do.

As the offseason progresses for the team, there are many decisions that need to be made and it will be interesting to see how the Cowboys front office proceeds for the 2017-2018 season. The team has a large amount of free agents and little salary cap room so they will have to be frugal in the free agent market and have another successful draft class. There will be a large amount of holes to fill but here are the top three areas that the Cowboys will have to pay attention to when the new league season starts in March.

Cornerback: Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr will be free agents and Jerry will have to make a decision on blowing up the position with mid-level free agents and draft picks or resigning one of the above players and draft a cornerback in the first three rounds. If i had to choose, I would roll the dice on Claiborne with a two year contract for ten million with playing incentives and see if he bites because the reality is that there won’t be a lot of teams looking at the oft-injured defensive back.

Defensive End: This position will be a sore spot for the Cowboys until they invest a first round pick to Rod Marinelli’s rush-men. The team has tried to plug and play individuals who are at best rotational players. If you are depending on Jack Crawford and David Irving to be five to eight sack players, you are doomed. That is no disrespect to either player because they have bought a solid work ethic to the team but they should be fifteen to twenty plays per game players not staples of the pass rush. Jerry Jones should be begging for Tank Lawrence to have his surgery so that he can be ready for training camp. Charles Tapper is the defensive end from Oklahoma who was placed on injured reserve early in the season so there is some hope that he will be able to reverse the misfortune he had in 2016...

I trust David Irving to contribute next year more than I do Tank Lawrence, or Charles Tapper. I agree we need some pass rushers I just don't have the confidence that you can find a good one at the end of the first round. I'm sure we are going to try. There are very few pass rushers in the league that get over 8-10 sacks a year. Guy like Michael Bennett and JPP are considered franchise DE's and they end up with 4-8 sacks many years. Pass rush seems to be schemed where your coaches need to be creative with the blitz while trusting your secondary to not give up the big plays. I'm not expecting a major difference in our defense no matter who we draft unfortunately. I hope I'm wrong.

If Jaylon pans out and we somehow find an immediate impact DE to rush the passer (whether it be through FA or the draft), I think the defense will get to where it needs to be.

Secondary played very well; no overhaul needed there, and our LB crew should be sick with Jaylon and Lee.

We are not that far away.

Isn't bringing Mo back esaentially hitting the "Easy" button?

I have concerns with any plan that counts on Mo to play more than 8 games in any given season.

At best, he should be viewed as the nickel CB. Any plan that envisions him as a starter is folly IMHO.

Losing Ron Leary will fetch the Cowboys a 4th rounder in compensation.
I'd rather try to find a way to get him on a short team deal and keep him a Cowboy. 3 years max.

I feel Ron deserves a huge contract. As much as I'd like him to stay I want him to get paid. He played his *** off this season.

The cap spend on the offense is already highly disproportionate. Can the Cowboys really afford to tilt the spend ever further towards the offense -- especially with Martin's contract coming up?

No, they cannot. We all have loved what Leary has given us, but as stated many, many times. He wanted out last year, and sat out to show his displeasure. He was also a professional and came in and played his *** off. He will draw plenty of offers and will move on.
If, we were to try and re-sign him (We won't, but for ***** and giggles lets assume) that would draw the meager resources we have, away from other positions. We have bigger needs. The 2018 season we should clear a lot of money and be more active - if they want to, but this year will be another frugal F.A. period. After last years great draft, they really need to double down - not let Jerry have his second round to play with. This can/might be boring, but they will just need to stay in their lane and draft as best they can - keep the momentum going. CB and DE are to two big items, but we surprisingly have plenty of others as well. Now saying that, they always manage to shift money around and do what ever they need to.
But I would like to see them not push a bunch of money forward in the form of a lot of restructures. They will have to do some, but I hope only what is necessary try and limit the future cap limits.
But back to Leary, thankyou sir, and thanks for the upcoming compensatory pick, see you when we play your new team.

You ask a very valid question at this point...and I can only answer as I see things that apply to him.

First, I think that Claiborne has established himself, as a valid cornerback in the league. Next, I just don't buy the wilting lilly picture that has been dubbed for him by disgruntled Cowboys fans. Smith was a wide receiver for Dallas, that was a high pick and was sent packing by who, Jimmy Johnson, because he was injured and didn't produce for four seasons. He ended up in the Pro Bowl for like eight seasons. I feel Claiborne will go a similar route and just start getting more games in than not. All players get hurt and out some. I feel Claiborne will be out on the carpet even more, and earn being there. Myself.

Wouldn't you, even with stating the above, love the taste of him on the roster for interior line depth? Boy howdy, I salivate...

The Cowboys can't seriously upgrade db and de all within 1 offseason without drastically overpaying. Smart money says you bring back Carr and Claiborne on short term deals, while also resigning Church. We cant simply afford to create more holes when its really just the pass rush that needsto be upgraded.

Overpay.

Status quo will not do.

We're talking about replacing Randy Gregory (suspension), Terrell McClain, Jack Crawford and Ryan Davis on the defensive line.

Gregory is a question mark regarding future availability and all decisions must be made as if he isn't going to be playing. McClain is a good player, but the team opted to sign Cedric Thornton last year instead of extending him. J. Crawford and Davis must be upgraded.

I'm not against Morris Claiborne on a short term deal, though looking for an outside free agent CB is my preference, and I expect Barry Church or J.J. Wilcox to re-sign.

We're discussing free agents, the hole is already there, it's just a question of how best to attend its repair.

Creating a hole would be getting rid of a player that is under contract for the 2017 season.
