Questions/Answers with Kristi Scales

http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...r-felt-little-intimidated-interviewing-cowboy

Question: Should the Cowboys draft, sign a FA, keep McFadden as starter, or something else for RB?

Kristi Scales: The Cowboys must address the running back position this offseason, there's no doubt about it. Darren McFadden has one more year remaining on his contract at a very affordable $1.25m base (last year he signed for 2 yrs, $3m, plus incentives). Whether or not he'll end up the starter in 2016 depends on what the Cowboys do in free agency, obviously. I think most fans (and media) expect Dallas to spend a draft pick on RB, but we thought that last year, too. So we could be surprised again. But I don't know that they want to commit big $$ to the Matt Fortes and Lamar Millers of the world.

Question: Have you ever been intimidated interviewing a Cowboy? And if so, who?

Kristi Scales: I've never really been intimidated while interviewing players. Some of the guys are imposing, for sure, but those kinds of guys (Charles Haley and Larry Allen come to mind) did not talk with the media. Haley talks a lot now, but he didn't as a player. And Larry Allen talked only once a year -- the day he was elected to the Pro Bowl -- and that was pretty much it. Allen was never rude, he just didn't like to give interviews so everyone pretty much left him alone. He is a great guy, though, and has been more engaging with everyone since retirement. I will admit to being a little intimidated in my first live interviews with Jerry Jones during our weekly pregame "Owner's Box" feature on Cowboys Radio. I just didn't want to mess up on-air with millions of people listening. But Jerry is engaging and funny and will answer any question. He's a dream for an interviewer. I do try to be respectful, however, and not take cheap shots. I remember having to ask him that first season about the run defense which had yielded several big runs in previous games. Instead of asking "Why does your run defense suck?" I asked something like "What has the staff identified as the deficiencies in the run defense, and what's been done to address them?" Same question, but more professional.

Question: I saw that La'el Collins had some pretty sick blocks this year. What's he like to see in person? Is he one of the more athletic linemen that you've seen or was there someone more impressive?

Kristi Scales: La'el Collins is an Eagle Scout. I mean that literally...he really is an Eagle Scout. He's also a well-spoken young man who acted very professionally and maturely in the locker room and any other encounters with the media. As for on-the-field, he's only going to improve as he gets more experience. He was inactive four games last year, but still took the starting job from Ron Leary at left guard. The future is very bright for Collins.

If Free can hold his own (or Green come in and perform well in his place), this offensive line is going to be so much fun to watch.

If we could add a TE blocking specialist and a FB who could flatten the LB, this OL & RB couldn't be stopped for less than 5 yrds.

I still don't know why an offensive guard isn't slotted as a tight end and used to plow the edges down. They suddenly get dumb on blocking techniques when slotted outside?

Boy, do I agree with you. Put Leary back at guard on 3rd down and let LC just open the holes for
any RB on the team. Of course, that would take some innovation on the part of this coaching staff
wouldn't it?

I guess current staff never heard of Tom Landry and innovation, huh?
