I wanted to have a fire going in the chimney tonight but it seems that every store around here is sold out of firewood (I've previously only used the kind that you keep in the bag while lit)

My stupid question is, can you use mesquite grill wood as a substitute along with a firestarter log? or is that completely out of the question?

get one of those huge, empty oil drums, roll it inside, throw some old newspapers in, and light a match

I wouldn't burn mesquite inside, but if you do, you better make DAMN SURE you're flue has a good draw. Otherwise, the inside of you're house is gonna smell like a BBQ joint.

Mesquite smoke is incredibly resinous, and any fabric it comes in contact with, is going to soak it up.

Yes you can...

Another little trick:

Get an empty beer or soda can, cut it in half about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, fill it with gas, build a wood teepee around it, and then light it. Acts like a mini torch and burns for a good 5-10 minutes. Works like a charm when trying to light large pieces of wood...

El Paso!

This is what I use to light charcoal and/or logs for the smoker.

If its wood, you can burn it. Mesquite won't be any more of a problem than any other wood thats burning. If smoke is not going up the chimney, it doesn't matter what kind of smoke it is, its going to stink.

you'll be fine.

Mesquite is probably more expensive. If you want to burn, I just use Fire Starter fluid. If you really want it to start, you can drill small holes in a larger log and fill it with Starter Fluid. The fluid is like a gel so it holds and burns pretty well. Really, as long as you use smaller sticks of wood, kindling, proper ventilation and add logs evenly, you really shouldn't have any problem building a fire.

I take it you've never tried to burn pine logs...

Pine produces the most smoke and Mesquite is probably next... that's why they use Mesquite for smoking meats. Hickory and Apple are also very bad in the fireplace as well... but great for smokers...

Pine leaves a bitter taste in meats so it isn't used for smoking...

As Poke said, your chimney better have some serious draw or you'll be spending the night elsewhere while your smoke-filled house airs out...

Oak, Pecan and Mesquite are the better woods for burning in a fireplace. Oak being the best. They all burn clean. Any wood can be burned in your fireplace as long as it is cured. Green pine is the worst thing you can put in your fireplace. Pine or Cedar leave the most creosote on the walls of your chimney. Which can cause a serious fire.
