Quick look at Toia

Thomas is going to be good here. Fits in well, imo.
I think he’s a guy who really helps. He has talent and he should be very motivated to turn his career around. I thought he was a really good signing and gives us 2 guys inside who can pressure the passer

I could not care less with a 1-tech having pass rush ability. My primary hope is seeing a guy on the center's right or left shoulder routinely occupying two blockers at the LOS during run plays. And getting some degree of push towards the quarterback on passing downs. Everything else is gravy for me. Hopefully, Jay Toia can meet those requirements.

Exactly . Dallas has pass rushers . Need run stuffers let Sanborn Murray & Liufau make plays .

Can you help others understand this?
Some folks want the entire defensive front putting the quarterback on the ground. That’s fine but I want that consistent pressure coming off tackle.

What I want most from defensive tackles is clogging running lanes. Take away the run. Make the offense one-dimensional and pass to convert downs. That is an advantage any defense should strive for.

This pick is exactly why I don't understand why fans were pushing for DT with 12, especially after we signed Osa. It appears Mazi has the other job locked down. We needed a run plugger with two jobs: stop the run and keep LBers clean. So this is my fav pick behind Booker ..........
You would like a 3 down player who can do it all and just a situational type that teams can take advantage of. Player like Nolen is a stout run defender but also he is good pass rusher.

Oh, I understand that, my point is the minute they signed Osa for over $20M, DT wasn't going to happen. My problem is, why would you lock in a guy for $20M that struggles with one but plays another one at a high level?

He's also more of a 3T. Our need was 1T.

From 1T I just want a garbage can full of dirt eating double teams, freeing up the LBs and DEs

That's right. He may be better at the run in this system too.

They need a penetrating 3t for this scheme to work, OSA fits that well.

He does, but he's an average run defender, and that is my issue with bringing him back, especially for $20M. Hell, I think you and many others preferred 3T at 12 over Booker, one who could rush the passer AND defend the run at a high level. So you were getting a cheaper player who could do both. Unless we are underestimating Osa's strength as a run defender.

I'm sure McClay and the Cowboy coaches knew exactly what the draft offered before signing Osa, but they did it anyway.

Yeah, I've watched some film breakdown on Toia. He doesn't look like a 7th round pick.
Agree. This is the best DT class in like 30 years, so in most classes he wouldn't be a 7th.

The more I look at it, the more I see he's one of the better run defenders in the class ..just doesn't really have an NFL pass rush. Yet.

But for stopping the run, I think he can fit at least as a rotational guy on early downs.

Because we're 2 DTS away from contention, that's why.
