I thought I read coming out of the combine that Felix's 40 yard times were rather average, but that he had good moves and was shifty.

Now all the articles about him brag about his speed.

Does anyone know his 40 yard time going out of the combine ?

Thanks in advance !

Somewhere in the 4.40 range. Ogletree said last week Felix is the fastest on the team with the ball in his hands.

His official Combine time was 4.47.

Remember, Football Outsiders said Felix would be a bust because he was too slow and too small.

Some players can keep their shorts and t-shirt speed when fully geared others can't. Not to mention acceleration is more important, you need to burst through and have a quicker acceleration to break away from the sure, hard hitting tacklers like your LBs and DL once you make it past there, that is where straight line speed plays into it, if you are really fast you should be able to at least tie if not beat the guy to the point he is aiming for on his angle of pursuit.

I remember that Quintin Demps ran a lot faster at the combine than Felix Jones. Significantly faster if I remember correctly.

Then, in the second game of Jones' and Demps' rookie season, Felix took a kickoff, broke into the open and started streaking down the left sideline. Demps was about 5 yards behind him and both were running at full speed. As they crossed the 50 yard line, Felix was starting to pull away, and by the time Felix got close to the goal line, it was clear that he was steadily pulling away from Demps.

There were no angles involved here, either. They both were running along the sideline and were running in a straight line towards the end zone, one right behind the other. Felix is just faster on the football field than Demps is, regardless of what their 40 times said. Plus, he was carrying the football and couldn't pump his arms normally as Demps was able to.

While the 40 yard dash at the combine gives a pretty good idea of player's speed... it is just a guideline. Watch people playing football if you want to know how fast they are when playing football.

Jones is flat out fast in pads and he cuts effortlessly. He is one of the faster RB out there, that's for sure.

While Felix has good speed, what makes him special is his ability to accelerate. When he makes a move, whether laterally or a cut upfield, he's able to break away from most defenders.

His ability to cut without slowing down is exceptional.

Yeah, straight line speed(Randal Williams) is nothing to worry about when a guy is pretty fast but has great change of direction speed and agility(Felix).

Did you see T.O. catch up to Felix from a dead stop? Dayum! And Stanback was a fast cat too.

Nice example.

Felix is one of those special players (like Chris Johnson) who maintains his speed in full gear while others (like Quentin) are weighed down by the pads.

Felix' main gift is that he cna almost run laterally without changing speeds...it's rare.

Thanks guys , I appreciated your insights and info.I agree the skill that Felix has that sets him apart is his ability to change direction without slowing down !

Did you guys see where Jones is up to 225?

He has put on some muscle in his upper body.

I love this guy, and I'll fight or argue for him getting the ball more all day, especially when he deserves the work load.

Jones is an extremely rare talent and a class act and team player.

Not handing the ball to this guy at least 16 times every game should be a crime.

Since 1980, here are the greatest backs to play in the SEC:

Hershel Walker
Bo Jackson
Emmitt Smith
Jamal Lewis
Darren McFadden
Felix Jones
