Quick Routes...Why Not?

I've been re-watching our last few games and it has become particularly salient that we don't run nearly enough quick routes.

Is this something you have noticed as well?

While I appreciate our big play ability, and those indeed take time to develop, we definitely could benefit from mixing in shorter throws to move the ball down the field. When I watch successful offenses like the Saints and the Cardinals it becomes apparent that their QB's get the ball out QUICKLY.

I understand that our receivers sometimes have difficulties getting separation, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem with designed short routes. Furthermore I like Miles' YAC ability and RW on slants and crossing routes.

Essentially I'm looking for possible explanations as to why we don't do this.

I would like to see some more slants and crossing patterns for Roy. They seem to be the better type of routes for him.

this is JG's MO, and it has been a large part of our undoing in the past couple of years...never understood why we don't throw more slants and screens - though to JG's credit we are beginning to utilize those routes a bit more...

I am just waiting for him to dust off the 30 yard slant...

I've noticed it and harped on it.

We had those kind of routes in the game plan against Philly, and they worked like a charm. Apparently we weren't expecting much of a pass rush against Green Bay or Washington, so we didn't have those plays in the game plan. My question has been why we couldn't make adjustments in those games and call some of those plays when we saw Romo was getting pressured.

totally correct...I never realized how easy those quick routes are to practice and execute and you can always get an easy 5 yards out of them almost every time...even the bad teams have success with them

This was the biggest complaint last year. Every route TO ran was 20 yards down field.

It would be good to throw in a little WCO and the 3 step...

He tried a few early vs Wash and they were tipped and almost picked. He got scared and crossed them off the play sheet for rest of game.

No excuse, a game plan should have flexibility built in. If we need to go back to what worked previously against another team it should be a matter of calling that particular play. It's not rocket scientist stuff here, take note JG, adjust, adjust, adjust it will provide you with longevity in your career choice.:bang2:

Before you can throw that quick slant you need a little help from the offensive line.Romo is not that big of a guy and doesn't do well on those routes unless he has a throwing lane.If the line can produce those throwing lanes all is fine and well,if they can't be prepared for alot of tipped/batted balls.

I agree. If those plays weren't prominant in the game plan, it shouldn't be that damn difficult to plug them in if the tone of the game dictates.
