Quincy concerns Ravens
In preparation for Quincy Carter, the Ravens are going back, back, back into the video archives.
The Ravens' defensive coaches have spliced together a tape of Carter's highlights from his last two seasons with the Cowboys, 2002 and 2003. The tape features Carter's big plays, his scrambles and his long completions on the run. The Ravens are concerned with his mobility.
"We've faced quarterbacks like Donovan McNabb and Jeff Garcia, and we see him as that kind of player," Ravens DE Marques Douglas said yesterday. "He's a playoff-type quarterback. He definitely has big-play capability."
Carter, who will start Sunday for the injured Chad Pennington (strained rotator cuff), has appeared in only 13 offensive plays this season for the Jets.
BRILLIANT BACKS: This should be a game within the game: RB Curtis Martin vs. MLB Ray Lewis. Martin called Lewis the best player in the NFL.
"You're going to get him at his best every day," Martin said of Lewis. "Some people, you beat them and beat them, and they kind of lay down a little bit. Him? Never. That's what makes him so good."
Martin has faced Lewis three times in his career. Advantage, Lewis. Martin has been held to 47, 58 and 52 yards on the ground. This time, Martin is humming, only 135 yards shy of his 10th straight 1,000-yard season.
"Curtis is 31, but he's playing like he's 25 right now," Lewis said. "It's always exciting to play against a guy like that, a class act who's going to come in and just play hard football."
Martin and Lewis (does that tandem sound familiar?) are friendly off the field. Martin isn't vocal on the field, but he said he may engage in some friendly banter with Lewis. ... DE Shaun Ellis (groin, probable) practiced on a limited basis and was upgraded. .... DE John Abraham (food poisoning) missed practice for the second straight day. ... Dime back Jon McGraw (abdomen, questionable) sat out for the second straight day.
TOUGHER SLATE: The Jets' remaining schedule is tied for the second-toughest in the NFL. (Their opponents' combined winning percentage is .594). By the way, their schedule in the first half of the season was the second-easiest (.373). ... Pennington appears on the December cover of Sports Illustrated for Kids. Does the jinx hold true for the kids magazine, too?
REED IT & WEEP: Jets fans may not want to read this, but the Jets could've chosen Ravens Pro Bowl S Ed Reed in Round 1 of the 2002 draft. The Jets needed a safety, but with the 22nd overall pick, they chose DE Bryan Thomas, now a backup. Reed went to Baltimore with the 24th pick. Reed, who scored last week on a record-setting, 106-yard interception return, has the most interception return yardage (509) in the league since 2002.
