We all remember all of Marinelli’s pet cats. Taco, who couldn’t play a lick. Hill, who hasn’t sniffed the field. Who can forget Marinelli’s cheerleading on draft day over Ivey. Marinelli’s had his influence on this defense, and from my point of view, that worked to the detriment of the team.

Now, we have Quinn, who seems to have pushed the Wright pick. Many said Wright was picked several rounds too early, and some of us wondered if we were watching Marinelli 2.0. But I have to say, so far, the defensive players picked seem to be performing better as a whole, and Wright in particular, than any of Marinelli’s hand picked guys.

Let’s hope that the trend continues and it translates to wins this year.

Marinelli should have been fired after the Taco over Watt pick. Period.

Coaches should coach and the draft folks should draft.

Parsons, Joseph, Wright all seem to be hits. Seen a few good things about Odighizuwa but need to hear more. Pretty crappy reporting from TC from the media. Same for Cox as well.

And do not forget the players he brought in as FA's.

If a defensive coordinator determined a draft pick the front office is the one that should be fired.

Period.

Determined being the key word.

McClay already spoke about the process. It is the same for all teams. Coaches tell the scouts what type of player they are looking for. Front office tells the players what positions are priorities. Scouts look for best players and also those who fit the needs of the coaches who might be looking for something specific.

Coaches, scouts, and front office get together and formulate draft and free agent plans and strategy. Front office has final say.

"Pick your groceries."

Because our management has no football philosophy in terms of scheme, they leave it to the coaches. For over a decade, we've had Offensive minded HCs. That left the scheme to the DC, and therefore much of defensive player selection. Ryan, Marinelli, Quinn, Nolan. Most of the stories are that they got to pick some of their groceries. Seemed like Ryan got both the draft and free agency of his final year to "prove himself". So dumb to have a short timer making long term decisions.

But I don't see this changing. Management has been working this way for a long time. Who among them is supposed to turn into the Keeper of the Scheme now? I don't see it.

I consider this the biggest problem with Jerry as GM, the delegating of scheme to coaches, particularly the side of the ball *not* represented by the HC. This probably gets worse before it gets better, as I expect that McCarthy won't be here long.

Final say, but the FO seems to *defer* to coaches a lot. Gave Ryan free agency and the draft to save his job. Rumor generally has it that a lot of picks were DC pet cats.

We haven't even played a regular season game yet.

Although that is true.
It is also true that we have heard much better things about Wright, Parsons, Joseph and Bohanna than we ever did with Taco or Hill during their rookie camp and preseason games.

Time will tell if this year's picks were good or not. Certainly we won't be judging them based off of their rookie training camp performance. But, I have as much of an issue with Quinn making the choice as I did Marinelli even if it works out. Let the scouts make the picks. If it's real close, then fine go with whomever the coaches want. Maybe we still get Wright much later or maybe he would have been gone, but you need to know your role and make the decisions based on months of scouting, not a few days of "I like tall guys, let's take him"...

Although i like the DQ hire and i am sure they drafted defensive players that will fit his old Seattle scheme, one thing i really wanted was for them to go get KJ Wright. The guy just turned 31 but has at least 2 good years ahead of him. And he isn't coming off any injury. He would have been perfect to lead this defense with Parsons, LVE and i guess for now throw in Jaylon. I think he is still out there as a FA, but i doubt they will pull the trigger. You know DQ would love to have the guy.

Best to wait until after week 1. Then his pay is not guaranteed. I think they see what they have before they would do this. Also depends on what he wants for a contract. May be too high still.

Yes, because the GM and the Director of Personnel are empty vessels it leads to coordinators having too much power in personnel. So blame them and not the coordinator.

Man y'all don't know if its Jerry making the pick, McClay, McCarthy, Quinn....lol every year we go through this where we are giving guys credit......Maranelli probably got TOO much credit for personnel decisions.....

That was as much McClay as it was Rod
I got why they did it honestly. It would seem like in a Maranelli defense that Taco would make more sense. But if you miss especially on a guy who doesn't even make it to the duration of his rookie deal....you better get ready to do some explaining.
