Ok, I'm going to make 2 posts tonight before I go to sleep, and this is the first of the two as neither are entirely related.

Now, I know what you're thinking. With us scoring 9 points, it doesn't seem like our offence did a whole lot, and we did miss quite a lot of opportunities. Jason Garrett made some critical tactical mistakes, and that will be discussed at length this week, I'm sure. Also, as much as I like Dak, and he's still the QB I support and I still want us to extend him, he had some horrendously bad balls. Pity he didn't have the glove on the entire game with the weather. Should've tried it during warmups. Our special teams is absolute rubbish. We were laughably bad there, and it ultimately led to the Pats scoring the only TD of the match (and we might well have won if not for the blocked punt with how our defence was playing).

Now, having said all of that, I must congratulate our defencive coaches and Kellen Moore. Firstly, to our defence. Bloody good job there!! Absolutely stunning! The only TD they conceded came as a result of a blocked punt from our colossal failure of a special teams unit. Other than that, they managed to keep Tom Brady and the Patriots out of the end zone in New England.

Secondly, I want to actually congratulate Kellen Moore. Now, hear me out here please. Yes, our offence produced 9 points in this game. However, I actually don't blame Moore as much as I blame Jason Garrett. In fact, I think Kellen Moore did extraordinarily well for a first time OC against the one of best coaches of all time (behind probably Landry) who learned under Parcells. Belichick's forte is defence. Kellen Moore went toe to toe with a Belichick led defence, and he actually did very well. I'm very impressed with what he did.

For example, on the drive towards the end of the first half, we were absolutely GASHING the Patriots defence. Aikman was pointing out how our run game was forcing Belichick into a situation he was not wanting. I saw a look of genuine uneasiness and confusion in the eyes of Belichick on that drive. He looked uneasy because our offence was performing as it is capable of. Zeke and Pollard were cutting through the defence of the best coach of all time besides Landry, and there was seemingly not a thing Belichick could do to stop it at one point of that sequence. He also seemed uneasy because he realized we were in a position to really break open the game with our offence. With how our defence was playing, I think he knew that if he didn't put a stop to it, the match probably doesn't end well for the Patriots. And that's where the confusion came in. How should be stop it? What was coming next? What were we setting up for? I've rarely seen Belichick look confused, and he looked utterly confused at one point. At the hands of a beginner OC. Unfortunately, as our drive was humming along, Dak missed Cobb on what was a brilliant play call, and a good idea. That miss, rain or not, was strictly on Dak, and not Moore. If Dak hits that, with the way our offence was humming along there, what course would the game have taken? Even after that, Moore had moments where he was giving Belichick fits.

So, while it was a painful loss, and I'm sure Moore will learn a great deal from having played against the best coach ever, besides Landry I'm impressed by him and he put up a valiant effort for a beginner. Oh, and he managed to do that despite having to try to learn under some idea of tutoring from Garrett and Linehan. That's a monumental mountain to climb. Imagine how good Moore would be with a proper mentor. Imagine what he'd learn. Having said all that, well done to Moore. I'm impressed by him, despite the loss.

I hope he learned a lot from Belichick's school of American Football. I don't think Garrett learned a bloody thing, but I reckon Moore got quite a bit out of it. Maybe he got some ideas from the Pats that he can use. Would be nice to see Moore use some of Belichick's and McDaniels' ideas against the Bills and Bears.

I think Moore did pretty well too, ESPECIALLY considering the weather.

We have to stop assuming Moore is this offensive guru.

He could very well be but he hasn't proven a thing yet. The offense has done its best work in the 4th quarter, running 2-minute offenses. Personally, I think that success has been due to Dak's ability to make plays, along with Gallup and usually Cooper. Beginning of the game is game planning (coaches) and we have been bad. We've moved the ball well late in the second half. Third quarter is all about halftime adjustments and against better teams, we haven't been great.

Once upon a time everyone assumed Garrett was an offensive guru as well.
  • former QB
  • intelligent (graduated from Princeton)
  • was an assistant under Nick Saban
HE MUST BE GOOD!

Look here. I'm not saying he's a guru. Not by ANY means. However, I'm not going to rip him for this game. I thought he called a fine game overall. Sure, he made mistakes, but he's a beginner. And he's got no help at the HC spot, which is helpful when you're a beginner at OC. I don't think he'll be thanking Garrett for any help he gives. So, for what it's worth, I am impressed with Moore for the way he called the game today, and I say well done to him overall.

Was it his decision to forget about Zeke in the 2nd half? What about running a screen and a run-option play to the short side of the field?

He can go with Garrett for all I care, the new HC should be able to hire his own OC but I know how that will go

I wouldn't mind the next HC getting a new OC. And I know Moore probably made critical errors. However, I'm tempering my expectations for him because of his lack of experience. I'm a rather patient chap. Garrett, on the other hand, has been at his position and a OC for AGES! Yet, he's making massive errors. So, in Garrett's case, I put a lot more expectations on him based in his experience, where as I'm more lenient with Moore. Also, him having Linehan and Garrett for mentors is not helpful at all to him. I'd like to see him at his position with a proper HC who can be a proper mentor to him.

If not for a special teams disaster, Moore would have defeated the #1 defense in the NFL.

In all likelihood, yes, he would've. And, not only that, but he'd forever have the memory of defeating one of the best coaches in the history of sports in his first year as an OC. That's REMARKABLE! Did he make mistakes? Sure! Of course! He's a beginner! I think if he has a better mentor and is allowed to use his brain more, I think his potential would be much greater than it is with the HC he's got now. If we get a better coach like Roman who can be a useful mentor to Moore, I'd imagine this won't be the last time he matches wits with Belichick. And, I reckon Moore will prevail next time. And it may have a lot more significance than this game if he can grow more into his potential with a better HC who can be a useful mentor to him.

thought I was on the Liverpool message board there for a bit and a half but I bloody agree with every word of it

Haha, cheers. But in all seriousness, I'm really impressed with Moore. Guru? No. Beginner? Yes. And he did very well today all things considered and against the team he was up against with the coach he battled. Oh, and where he did the battle with the worst conditions he's had to face yet. And he did very well. I reckon a better mentor for him and/or our special teams not being completely useless when punting likely yields a win today over the Pats. And I think if he gets a better mentor, his next match with Belichick will have more importance. And that match, I think Moore will prevail.

Until Garrett leaves the building , we don't know for sure about Moore. Moore is still better than most of coordinators we've had. Wished we had Callahan to help him with the run game and to work with our ol.

Only thing I don't like about Moore is he seems to take too long each game to start mixing it up.

Everything stills seems awfully predictable through the first few drives of each game then suddenly he wakes up and you start seeing different stuff.

Why can't he just start games like that?

Also, you never know what Moore's offense will do when teams have a year of film on it.

But I'm encouraged by Moore. Let's keep him.

This experiment and OJT should be in Cincy.
