Guys, I'm concerned. An NFL Pro Bowler is missing. Has anyone seen Ed Reed?

I could've SWORN he was Defensive Player of the Year. I could've SWORN that he was MUCH better than our own Roy Williams, and that it WASN'T the Ravens amazing supporting cast that allowed him to thrive. I mean, that's what everybody was saying right? Not just on this board, but in the media, among fans, etc.

Roy struggled last year playing out of position with a weak supporting cast, but that didn't matter. He had the "overrated" label stuck on him pretty hard, didn't he? He was supposed to be a pauper compared to the great Mr. Reed.

But the tables have turned a bit now, haven't they? Now Roy is playing his natural position, his supporting cast has improved, and the Ravens D isn't scaring anyone much anymore. Roy's numbers are putting Ed's to shame so far.

This is serious, fellas. Flyers, ads, pictures on milk cartons...whatever it takes. Poor Ed Reed is missing.

One could argue that Roy is the best strong safety (or whatever each team calls their safety who plays closer to the line) in the league, but best safety period? No, I wouldn't say that. He really is a bit of a liability in coverage.

This is what happens, when he doesnt have the super D to protect him. I said it last year, that if Roy was able to play on a defense that good, where he could do as he pleased, he would have a much better year statswise than he did last year. Now that his D(reed) isnt creating the blitzes and havoc it did last year, he isnt having all these big plays? Not a coincidence.

No, he is not. However, I would say he should be considered one of the top three or four safeties in the NFL.

Ed Reed has a high ankle sprain and teams have been avoiding throwing at him. That explains his lack of plays this season.

i suppose so, but dawkins is imo clearly fading. he isnt playing like he used to, and his best years are passed.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -- Ravens star safety Ed Reed will almost certainly miss Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears with a high ankle sprain, an injury that could sideline the 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year for several weeks.

Reed did not practice Wednesday and was listed as doubtful (25 percent chance of playing) on the team's injury report.

``Ed's responding to treatment real well, all the imagery is good. But it's still a high ankle sprain,'' Ravens coach Brian Billick said. ``He's very doubtful for this game, but we'll see how it progresses.''

Reed hurt his right ankle in the fourth quarter of Baltimore's 16-3 win over Cleveland last Sunday. He did not talk to reporters Wednesday, but as he shuffled toward the lunch room he said, ``See? I'm walking.''

Reed, a two-time Pro Bowler, had an NFL-record 358 return yards with his nine interceptions last year, including a record-breaking 106-yarder against Cleveland. He also had 89 tackles.

Opposing teams have avoided throwing his way this season, one reason he does not have an interception. But he led the secondary with seven tackles Sunday before hurting his ankle.

If Reed can't play, he will be replaced by Chad Williams, who has been used primarily on special teams but also has started twice during a four-year NFL career.

``We shouldn't miss a beat. I know we're going to lose a playmaker, but we should be all right,'' Williams said. ``I'm a playmaker, but Ed's on a whole other level. You just have to take the plays as they come and make the right plays at the right time.''

Billick expects the Bears to test Williams, but he figures the 5-foot-9 safety will be up for the challenge.

``They're going to try to play-action and make vertical plays down the field,'' Billick said. ``We've got a great deal of faith in Chad. He has knowledge of the defense, he knows what he's supposed to be doing. He's been solid for us in every phase we've put him in.''

DE Jarret Johnson has been playing in place of Anthony Weaver, who is sidelined indefinitely with a toe injury. Now it's Williams' turn to take over for an established starter.

``He's been here for a while, he knows the defense,'' linebacker Peter Boulware said. ``That's the good thing about our defense, when one person goes down, another person steps up and can do the job. We have confidence in Chad that he can do the job.''
