So I came across a few opinions at an Eagles board I visit from time to time, stating that Aikman was overrated.
Same old B.S. I'm sure we've all heard... he had a great supporting cast, all he did was hand off to Emmitt, his passing numbers aren't gaudy, blah blah blah.
Funniest quote I've read in a long time...
What can you say about him besides the fact that he won 3 superbowls? :laugh2: Those Eagles fans and their inexperience with Super Bowl wins.
Of course, I had to respond and crap all over that nonsense, and I figured I'd share my response with you guys... it was a lot of fun! :starspin
Made me realize how much I truly love Troy Aikman (in the most hetero way possible ) and it might even force the small "Romo's better than Troy!" crowd to reconsider. Long way to go for Tony to reach Troy's status.
Without further ado...

Hahahaha... Aikman overrated. *Yawn* I've heard arguments for why Aikman, Emmitt, and Michael are all overrated. This one might be the easiest to dispute.
Troy played his best football in the biggest games. That's more than you can say for a lot of today's so-called "great" QBs... Donovan McNabb, for example.
Okay, so you think Troy was overrated because of his great supporting cast? Then penalize Joe Montana for the same thing. Oh, and Steve Young. And Peyton Manning. Wipe out Elway's 2 Super Bowl rings. Wipe out Favre's. Wipe out all 4 of Montana's. And Young's 1. And just about any other Super Bowl won by any other QB ever.
The supporting cast argument doesn't fly. Football is a team game.
Up next, the mediocre passing stats argument.
Yes, our offense was built around Emmitt Smith, and Troy didn't rack up a lot of passing yards in the regular season. He's still thought of as one of the most accurate QBs ever, with a completion % in the low-mid 60s. You might think, "Big deal, 1/3 of QBs today can say the same"... but keep in mind, the league is getting more and more pass-oriented. Back in the 1970s, interceptions were more common than TD passes.
Maybe you don't remember this, but we had to do more than just "hand off to Emmitt Smith" to win those 3 Super Bowls.
Troy was the Super Bowl MVP in his first Super Bowl, going 22-30 for 273 yards and 4 TDs with 0 INTs.
Here are Aikman's playoff stats in those 3 seasons, including the Super Bowl stats...
1993...
61-89, 68.6% completion rate, 795 yards, 8 TDs, 0 INTs. QB rating of 126.4.
1994...
61-82, 74.4% completion rate, 686 yards, 5 TDs, 3 INTs. QB rating of 104.0.
1996...
53-80, 66.3% completion rate, 717 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT. QB rating of 106.1.
TOTAL for all 3 postseasons...
175-251, 69.7% completion rate, 2198 yards, 17 TDs, 4 INTs, QB rating of 112.6.
Spread out over a full 16 game season...
3908 yards, 30 TDs, 7 INTs.
This is the guy you claim could only "hand off to Emmitt"???
We rode Troy's arm in the playoffs these years probably more than we rode Emmitt's legs, and that's saying something.
Keep in mind... these numbers came in the playoffs and the Super Bowl... against playoff/Super Bowl competition... CRUNCH time.
THAT is what separates the "good" from the "great". That is why Troy's a Hall of Famer.
That's how you win Super Bowls, Philly fans. You get your best players to play their best football in January (and nowadays, early February). And Troy did just that.
The numbers don't even tell the full story. Troy was our leader in EVERY sense of the word. Our star players were also the hardest workers and the most prepared each Sunday.
Not to keep picking on McNabb, but Troy would be the last guy on our team to be tired and dry-heaving late in a HUGE game like the Super Bowl. He conditioned himself well-enough to still be at his absolute physical peak in late January, and his playoff numbers reflect this.
Who's "overrated" again?

Hahaha... wow. Just reached the peak of the NFL mountain THREE times? That's it???What can you say about him besides the fact that he won 3 superbowls?
