Now they are saying that she is believed to have died 7 days before Gene with a pulmonary heart issue and that he then died of coronary disease and alzheimer's.

Hanta Virus. Its a nasty one.

Hackman apparently had Alzheimers. So no real surprise at his actions or lack thereof. What I want to know is that she clearly was sick for a while before she died; why did she not call for help? And above all else, why was there not some kind of medic alert system there. And of course why did no one check on them for two weeks. And I am thinking no one had checked on them for some time before her death as well.
any way you look at it, this was a very sad event.

As to Gene knowing whether his wife passed or not... I would consider that they had a large enough house that Gene had his own bathroom and walk in shower for his needs, and that his wife used another separate bathroom with all of her stuff there.

So it may be that Gene never went to the part of the house that had the bathroom she used.

People that suffer from Dementia don't know what day it is. They know it's daytime or nighttime.

Just a tragic thing that she died suddenly from a disease. And with her gone, that likely led to Gene not getting his meds, and to his eventual demise.

They are saying he had an empty stomach. In his condition he wasn't able to take care of himself and possibly couldn't process his wifes death. It's a shame that they weren't being checked in on.
