OAKLAND — One fan was stabbed during Sunday's Raiders game, another was cited for shooting off fireworks afterward and more than 30 were arrested mostly for public intoxication, law enforcement officials say.
Despite those incidents, Lt. Dave Kozicki said Monday "there were really very few problems" considering the game against the Dallas Cowboys was a sellout with more than 62,000 people attending.
Kozicki said: "We do aggressive law enforcement out there. It's a safer place than when the Raiders first came back (to Oakland). It's due to the cooperation between OPD and management of the Coliseum and the Alameda County sheriff's office."
The stabbing, which happened just before halftime in section 102, was one of the more serious incidents.
A 22-year-old Oakland man told police a fight involving several people had broken out in the section, and although he was not part of it, he still was hit from behind.
When he turned to confront his attacker, he said he was stabbed in the chest but did not realize it until later, when he saw his clothes were bloody.
He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. No arrests were made.
After the game, a 24-year-old Salinas man was arrested for launching illegal fireworks from a parking lot on the Hegenberger Road side of the Coliseum.
Police have been cracking down on illegal fireworks at the request of Coliseum officials.
Sgt. Gary Tolleson said undercover officers saw the man launching what turned out to be a "Ninja Super Magnum Shell," which exploded in bright colors hundreds of feet in the air.
The man was arrested by uniformed officers. Some other rocket launchers eluded officers.
"This is a high priority for us before, during and after the games," Tolleson said. "We will continue arresting people and confiscating the fireworks until people get the idea."
He pointed out that everyone arrested for the illegal fireworks so far are from out of town. "The come to Oakland and think they can get away with some of this stuff. The reality is we're not going to put up with it."
Police and the sheriff's office made more than 30 arrests at the game, most for public drunkeness and a few for drug possession, fighting and in one instance, violating parole.
Kozicki said police and sheriff's deputies were dealing with several issues at the game.
One was Homeland Security related because a man had committed suicide by blowing himself up Saturday outside a college football game in Oklahoma City and the NFL had alerted police at all game sites to be extra observant.
Another was alcohol consumption. "We're always trying to find better ways to manage those who choose not to drink responsibly," Kozicki said.
And of course the continual traffic congestion problems, which in some ways is a good because it means more people are attending the games, he said.
