Teams aren't going to deal with the distractions a marginal player brings. Ask Tim Tebow. Now I'm in no way comparing their situations so please don't go there. But Tebow (as much as I supported him) brought a distraction with him, and that distraction was his HUGE fan base. And because of that HUGE fan base, the media pandered to him and to his fan base. Even though I think he had much to be desired as a quarterback, he had intangibles that were off the chart. And had he been able to sit behind a veteran quarterback and learn the position without the fanfare, I believe he would still be on a roster today. But wherever Tebow went, the media followed. It's not his fault, per say. But it is what it is.
Similarly, the reason Michael Sam is not on a team today is because he's a marginal player, and he brings with him a distraction. No team is going to say this because no owner, GM or NFL staff wants to be castigated for not wanting a homosexual player on their team. But the fact Sam didn't get pick up by ANY TEAM speaks volumes. If Sam were a first-round talent, he would be on someone's roster. But as a marginal player, teams consider it not worth the hassle.
