Here are 10 Cowboys nuggets from the past week.
1.) Most focus on Tony Romo and Dez Bryant when discussing the key pieces the Cowboys are currently missing. But the defense isn't exactly at full strength, either. A defensive guru like former Super Bowl-winning head coach Tony Dungy was quick to point that out Friday afternoon on 105.3 The Fan's Ben and Skin show [KRLD-FM].
"I think that even more-so than Dez coming back and Romo, which will be huge, they get Greg Hardy back, they get [Randy] Gregory back, [Rolando] McClain, they get those guys who can salt the game away when they do have the lead, that's when I think they can really be tough," Dungy said. "If they get their full complement of people back, nobody is going to want to play them in December."
2.) Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones recently provided the latest rehab update for Randy Gregory [ankle] and Dez Bryant [foot].
"They're doing well," Jones told Ben and Skin Friday afternoon. "We're on the timeline. The goal all along has been to try to get them back by the bye, so far they're on target."
The Cowboys bye comes in Week 6. They travel to New York to take on the Giants in Week 7.
3.) Tony Romo usually handles the weekly conference calls with media covering the Cowboys' upcoming opponent. Since Romo's sidelined with a fractured clavicle, Jason Witten handled those duties this week. One of the questions from the New Orleans media was about La'el Collins, the former LSU standout who got his first career start last week against the Falcons.
"La'el's done a great job," Witten said. "It's definitely a different situation with how we got him and what happened in the draft. But he just came, put his head down and gone to work. You can tell he's a talented kid. He's worked really hard to get himself in position to play. He came in at Philadelphia and played well. And then, of course, last week I thought he did a really good job. You can tell he's got a unique skill set and really caught on well and played well and meshed well with our offensive line, which has been one of the strengths of our team the last couple years. He's got a bright future."
4.) Punters aren't mentioned often during an NFL work week. That changed this week as Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett talked about how well Chris Jones has performed through the first three games.
"He's played really well," Garrett said. "I think if you look at him week in, week out, he's someone who is making a big impact on the game. His directional punting is outstanding, even last week if you look at the sheet afterward you say, 'Oh, he had a 39 yard average, or 39-yard net, whatever it was.' But three of them were inside the 15-yard line. He's just done a really good job controlling field position for us and limiting returners opportunities. It's a collective thing, our cover guys are a big part of it too, but he's really off to a good start."
5.) Sean Lee was forced to leave the field for two series against the Falcons after splitting his lip. The gash required eight stitches. What did Jerry Jones think about critics who had a tough time understanding why Lee left the game?
"I don't know of anybody that is mentally and physically any tougher than Sean Lee," Jones said Friday on The Fan's G-Bag Nation show. "You see tough when somebody just takes a lot, just is willing take a lot of punishment. They say, 'Boy, that's a tough guy.' In my mind, it's OK to be able to take it, but the tough guy is the one that gives it out, and Sean Lee will give it out. ... He is aggressive tough, along with being able to play and take it. He defines tough to me."
