Joseph Randle (RB-Dal)

With DeMarco Murray hurt, Dallas’ fifth-round pick got the chance to fill the role everybody expected him to get a shot at this season with Murray being one of the more injury-prone runners in the NFL. Lance Dunbar was also out for the Cowboys, leaving the backfield to Randle and Phillip Tanner. Despite drawing the start, Randle played just 46 of 82 snaps while Tanner saw 20 as the Cowboys called passes on 52 of their plays, showing a lack of confidence in their replacement backs by going even more pass-heavy than usual.

Randle did little to change that opinion on Sunday, rushing for just 65 yards on 19 carries and catching 3 passes for 28 yards. His longest run of the game was 12 yards and came when the Eagles clogged the middle and forced Randle to bounce outside. While he did a nice job of quickly recognizing the play was busted and getting outside, he had a huge hole to run through and just had to hit it. Randle’s vision and instincts are good but his talent as a runner is ordinary, as he shows little in the way of speed and power to get more than what’s blocked and went down right after contact on his biggest run.

With the Cowboys souring on Murray as a future feature back and potentially looking into the trade market, it’s unclear if Randle will see another 19-carry game this season.

Randle did as well as Shady McCoy in that particular game ... Not bad for a rookie.

Most importantly he didn't turn the ball over. Well done Rook

Exactly. The people judging Randle based on one game would most likely have the same assessment of McCoy, because he did less.

Eagles defense is bad against the pass but 12th against the run. I thought we were pretty good against the run but we're one below them at 13. I'd say he did pretty well in his first start in a hostile environment.

He looked alright. On most of his runs, I didn't really see how he could have gotten more than he got. There weren't a lot of lanes to run through.

I'm still interested to see what Dunbar could do with extended time, assuming he's got his turnover woes under control.

Randle will get much better quickly, having been thrown into the fire, so to speak. With only him and Tanner splitting reps, he gets a lot more learning time and feel for the game. I think.. hope.. he gets better, not that I've been disappointed so far.

He was adequate. I think he can play but I don't expect more than what the line gives him. He is patient and sets his blocks up. Hits the line well, gets skinny, and accelerates when he can. He doesn't break tackles much but he gets the lean at the end. Ordinary is descriptive.

i'm still not sure if we're not very good at run blocking, the backs aren't great at finding the creases, or our play-calling just doesn't stick with the running game...but obviously our offense is really lacking here

I think it is a little early to put a label on Randle, but it is clear he needs to reach down deep and bring it if Murray can't go today.
