What happens to a players contract when a player dies when under contract? Like does the team have to continue to pay the contract to his family or is the contract void or what?

The team still has to pay I believe.

From the CBA:

If Player’s injury in the performance of his services under this contract results in his death, the unpaid balance of his yearly salary for the season of injury will be paid to his stated beneficiary, or in the absence of a stated beneficiary, to his estate.

Why, are you thinking of doing in one of our players but want to make sure there's no cap hit first?:laugh1:

thats on-field, what about off field? suicide, murder, car accident??

I'm going to assume that the contract is terminated -- however, I'd guess that there is insurance that covers the deal. There wouldn't be a point to the team paying the deal out, if they did the insurance wouldn't kick in.

In these cases the contract is terminated immediately since the team or the game had no part in the death and they hold no responsibility. However, I believe that the player’s estate gets to keep the entire signing bonus (part of which the team could recover for an early retirement).

I'm not certain how the Signing bonus is handled as far as the cap is concerned. Do they continue to prorate it over the original length of the contract, take an immediate cap hit for the remaining portion of the prorated bonus, or does the league allow the team to write it off take it out of the cap all together?

It's really pretty simple. Anything that is guaranteed in that year (remember veterans' contracts are guaranteed if they are on the roster opening day) or in future years must be paid. A team is under no obligation to the estate for any other money.

As an example, if Roethlisburger would not have survived his accident, the Steelers wouldn't have owed his estate a nickel.

Hensonite perhaps?

For the record, I believe Henson's contract is guaranteed so the team would owe his estate his full salary for each remaining year of his contract.

 A Hensonite wouldn't kill Drew, Romo might be a target though.:laugh1:
