I haven't really posted here since the draft ended, mainly because I knew it would be an extreme, dead period with the lockout and all. Here's what I think will happen with the Cowboys:

The offense is going to carry the team in the early part of the season. Converting to a new defensive scheme is going to be a difficult transition. Tyron Smith is the least of our worries; it's the defense and the players communicating and understanding Rob Ryan's scheme. Once free agency begins, I FULLY expect Jerry to bring a couple players over from Cleveland to ease the transition for the Dallas D. Abram Elam anyone? It's a very real possibility. I don't think Sensabaugh gets re-signed. I think our safeties are Huff and Elam next year.

I do not think it's a coincidence that our 2nd and 3rd round picks in Bruce Carter and DeMarco Murray, respectively, are basically developmental picks. Neither are expected to have an immediate impact in 2011. I think Jerry has a reasoning with this. The developmental picks of Carter and Murray should show you how aggressive Jerry plans to be in free agency. He's planning for the future with the draft (except Tyron Smith, who will start immediately). Carter will knock Brooking off the team in 2012, and Murray will push Barber and/or Choice off the team this year, and could push for a starting job in 2012. Heck, even David Arkin is planning for Kosier's or Leonard's departure in 2011 or 2012.

I think we'll be in the bidding for Nhamdi Asomogha, mainly because Jerry won't want Philly or Washington to get him. It's clear that WR is a position of strength on the Cowboys, so a division rival adding a shutdown CB would be detrimental to what the Cowboys like to do on offense. We're a passing team.

The 2011 season, if there is one, will be uncapped, so players like Bowen and Hatcher will be restricted FA's once again. I could see Ryan bringing in Kenyon Coleman for depth and experience in his defense, but generally, the DE's are set for this year.

Just my two cents with everything, guys. I know it's such a slow and frustrating time, when normally we should be getting excited about our free agent signings and the potential of our draft picks. There will be football one day again.

A fun read.

And I like the question that you raise concerning the need for Jerry to do something special for his team's benefit. I do have some reservations this season, although. I have my own questions how much of the team's present overview will allow a large splurge in free agency.

Even with an uncapped year. That sounds sweet, but there are at least five to six players who are veterans on this year's present association with Dallas, that will not be around by the start of a 2012. Once thing start, there will be some quick additions and it will be a challenge in the least, as to how things develop towards the very start of the season. It will take the heart of a Champion for this team to thrive once the whistle first blows.

The challenge is there, and for a fan, a chunked full event when it starts for real again.

I'm not sure I agree about Murray at all. He is going to get a lot of snaps this year. Especially if we should move Choice out. I don't think we will see much of Carter until we get past the bye week.

No way Jerruh spends that kind of money on anything other than a QB. He remembers Deion and Nmadi is no deion.

I agree. Murray could lead the team in carries in 2011. Do I expect it? No. But any rookie RB has a best chance to impact a team. He fills a need Garrett felt we had. There's no other way to look at it post draft with it coming out that he was just one of 3 RBs we were looking at early on.

He will play a large role for us in 2011.

I'll take a wait and see with Murray, but now way do I write him off for 2011 like most are. All I keep hearing from credible sources is that the kid should be ready for camp. Yet every talking head and most fans look at the guy as a 2012 prospect.

Murray will contribute this year but it will take time to work him into the offense. With less TC this year that task will be more difficult.

To hear Garrett talk about Murray, it seems pretty clear he's counting on him being the third-down back, so I'd say he'll have an immediate impact in a role that really suits his skills.

I don't think Choice is going anywhere this year. I think he will be counted on to essentially replace Barber as the goal-line back and closer. He's the team's best between-the-tackles runner because of his vision. He was forced to pick his way through traffic in college because he lacks the speed that allowed Jones and Murray to take the path of least resistance.

Murray is not a "future" pick. He will get alot of snaps in the offense.

Bruce Carter is another story. His injury could sideline him for awhile. But there is no need to rush him with Brooking and James. Even if he comes back this year, he wont be 100%...He's definately a 2012 player

Carter had an ACL that was not too bad, as I recall. So I would not be surprised if by camp he was close to 100%.

Carter will play a ton this year. They need depth there anyway as both of those older guys were getting winded last year.
Furthermore, Ryna's various packages will allow him opportunies--as h elikes guys that can run.

Carters injury really take 2 years to "fully" heal. Even though he will contribute this year, he will not be 100% till 2012

While it can take a couple of years to get back to speed, that's at the upper range for rehab. It generally takes about a year and now even less to fully recuperate. Both rehab and the surgical procedures themselves have come a long way. It also depends on the actual surgical technique that had to be performed. A complete reconstuction of the ACL requires a more extensive procedure than say a partial tear of the ACL.

Not too bad? It had to be reconstructed.

1) Rob Ryan's scheme won't have anything to do with how well the players pick it up. Especially considering the lockout. No matter how many or pivotal the FA pickup is, there's still a learning curve. It doesn't matter if you're Demarcus Ware or Sean Lissemore.

2) Bruce Carter and DeMarco Murray as developmental picks? Their only "development" will be them learning the system. Jerry drafts for impact in Rounds 1-3. I doubt either one of them will be in "development" for long, if at all. With Barber and Choice on their heels, it'll be easy for Murray to swoop in and snatch one, if not both of their spots. Carter, on the other hand, will have two good players to learn from and have Lee to learn with. Accountability is huge for a young body and he has it. There will be plenty of drive and motive for them to succeed, not only in their career but to succeed their predecessors.

3)Nnamdi wearing The Star would be huge but that's a pretty huge bullet to bite if Jerry's reasoning is to keep him away from Philly, Washington, or New York. Peace of mind is priceless but there's no way he'll fork up a minimum of $80 million for it. He's not that stupid.

Free Agency is going to supplement a strong draft for us but I'm not looking for it to shore up glaring holes. We'll see how it goes.

Butch Davis said the Carter had a partial tear of the ACL.

I somewhat disagree on number two above. Whereas in the past, the team definitely would attempt to hit a homerun on projections of upper area talent, that has changed some over the past three Jerry Jones lead drafts. Here, the policy seems to be getting 'their acts' together.

Oh, they are definitely, and pretty accurately grading for top end talent levels, but with their selections now, they are not picking for positional holes alone, but how they project to fit into the system now in Dallas.

This could be some of the reason why offense was gone to stronger in this draft, as Jason Garrett's directions are much more defined now than the defense that Rob Ryan will develop.

That is what I heard. It was not a complete reconstruction. I agree if it had been we should not expect anything from him this year.

He's received an 'early level' clearance to work out. The Cowboys have stated that they will probably feather him back into the practice schedule up front.

OK. I needed the reassurance.

Garrett clearly isn't enamored with Choice, and he doesn't seem very comfortable with Felix carrying a big load, so if Murray can show something in TC and preseason (assuming those things happen) he probably will get a fair number of snaps.
