Randy Gregory Deserves To Be Week 1 Starter At Defensive End For Dallas Cowboys
By Kelly Anderson

There were a number of teams in the league that decided to pass on the talented but troubled rookie Randy Gregory when questions sprung up about his mental health and his failed drug test just before the 2015 NFL Draft. But the Dallas Cowboys did their due diligence on him and felt as though they had the proper support structure in place to help the defensive end not only deal with his issues, but also help him maximize his tremendous potential.

Well, if the first two preseason games are any indication of what’s to come, Jerry Jones may have just hit a home run with his calculated gamble.

The former Nebraska Cornhusker has been everything the Cowboys hoped he would be when they drafted him in the second round. He is a bit undersized to play defensive end at only 240 pounds, but his burst off the line and his strong hands give him the force that’s necessary to bull rush and shed the blocks of bigger offensive linemen. He also has an array of spin and swim techniques available to him when tackles are expecting to get his power move.

He has already racked up two sacks in two games and has come close on a number of occasions to collecting a few more as he’s been a relentless force on the field. It is just the preseason and a good number of his pressures have come against the second team units, but you must keep in mind that the Cowboys have been running a pretty vanilla defense so far this summer. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is not known for throwing out exotic blitz packages but he does have a reputation for rotating fresh bodies in and out of his defensive line and for putting his players in positions to help them be successful.

So just when an offense has had their fill of Greg Hardy, Jeremy Mincey and Demarcus Lawrence coming at them all game long, the Cowboys will then look to their closer Gregory to finish them off. But if he keeps progressing like he has, Gregory could find himself starting as well as finishing games for this team.

It's really hard to know what will happen in the regular season, based on pre season. Once teams start breaking down Gregory and start game planning him, things could change. I think it's better to bring him off the bench but Coaches will make the right call here.

Mincey can start at either end position; I would determine which young DE (Tank or Gregory) plays the run constantly well and start him opposite of Mincey.

I agree with this, but the fact that teams will HAVE to game plan for him specifically, has to put a smile on my face. We will actually have someone that teams have to pay attention to, and when we add in Hardy and a better Lawrence, it looks promising.

If he's one of the top four defensive linemen, I think it's better to bring him off the bench...as soon as the game starts.

I agree. He is going to be able to pass rush. If you bring him along, you have a much better chance of him being around at the end of the season when we will really need that pass rush for the playoffs. He's a Rook and typically, Rookies wear down. That's not always but usually that's what you see at about game 10. It's better if we limit his snaps and use him when he will do the most good IMO.

Noooooooo.

Roll him out fresh on passing downs.

If we get up by a couple TD's then he may not come off the field then.

Exactly
Use him where he can have the most impact
Starting in the nfl doesn't mean what it once meant. There are situation where the starter doesn't get the most snaps
But with Gregory you want him chasing Eli with fresh legs, not chasing rb's

You guys are all correct (except the original posted article). The Seahawks had success slowly bringing undersized DE Bruce Irvin into the games his rookie year on passing downs. It's clear the Cowboys' current plan is to use Gregory 30-40 snaps per game as long as Mincey, Hardy, and Lawrence stay healthy. It's a luxury this team hasn't had in a long time, and it's nice to actually have quality depth on Defense.

With Hardy out for the first 4 games of the season Gregory and Lawrence need to come up big. If they do I think we can get through these games in great shape
