Randy Gregory Deserves To Be Week 1 Starter At Defensive End For Dallas Cowboys

There were a number of teams in the league that decided to pass on the talented but troubled rookie Randy Gregory when questions sprung up about his mental health and his failed drug test just before the 2015 NFL Draft. But the Dallas Cowboys did their due diligence on him and felt as though they had the proper support structure in place to help the defensive end not only deal with his issues, but also help him maximize his tremendous potential.
Well, if the first two preseason games are any indication of what’s to come, Jerry Jones may have just hit a home run with his calculated gamble.
The former Nebraska Cornhusker has been everything the Cowboys hoped he would be when they drafted him in the second round. He is a bit undersized to play defensive end at only 240 pounds, but his burst off the line and his strong hands give him the force that’s necessary to bull rush and shed the blocks of bigger offensive linemen. He also has an array of spin and swim techniques available to him when tackles are expecting to get his power move.
He has already racked up two sacks in two games and has come close on a number of occasions to collecting a few more as he’s been a relentless force on the field. It is just the preseason and a good number of his pressures have come against the second team units, but you must keep in mind that the Cowboys have been running a pretty vanilla defense so far this summer. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is not known for throwing out exotic blitz packages but he does have a reputation for rotating fresh bodies in and out of his defensive line and for putting his players in positions to help them be successful.
So just when an offense has had their fill of Greg Hardy, Jeremy Mincey and Demarcus Lawrence coming at them all game long, the Cowboys will then look to their closer Gregory to finish them off. But if he keeps progressing like he has, Gregory could find himself starting as well as finishing games for this team.
