Gregory hasn't even played in one regular season game and everyone is talking about how amazing he is. Even going so far as to say we no longer need Hardy(A top rusher in the NFL).

Tap the breaks guys. Let's see Gregory against starters in the regular season with something actually on the line.

We don't NEED to sign him regardless. Hardy became a luxury when Gregory fell into our laps.
You can never have to many good pass rushers. Allowing Hardy to walk likely means spending draft resouces to replace him and who knows if the guy you draft will be half as good. Hardy isn't a luxury by any defination. It looks like we finally have front line talent we can put across the line to rush the pasher but we are not overly blessed with pass rushers to the point that we can just start letting them go. The game is won in the trenches and now that we have finally built our up to a playoff caliber you don't let play making top talent just walk.

If Hardy expresses interest in resigning during the season, you have to sit down negotiate and see if something reasonable can get hammered out. His ability to move inside allows the team to play also Lawrence and Gregory as much as they want. It's very similar to what the NYG did with their DL in their SB runs. The only difference being Hardy is probably a more complete player IMO than Justin Tuck, who often kicked inside to DT.

As for Gregory. ..the ceiling is sky high. Let's hope he continues to progress and becomes a very good NFL pass rusher.

Yes, you do. It happens all the time. We have a cap to manage; we have offensive lineman in the future that need to be signed, we have a DT that may want a bigger deal if he plays at a high level again this year, we'll be in the market for a #1 corner next year. Hardy is a luxury, we have the luxury of saying "We have a young talent behind Hardy with high upside, we can let him walk and address another position on our defense".

I think the argument of keeping him at a high price that I could buy into is how much we use him across the line, if he moves DE spots, if he plays some DT. What I do know is, a 11-15 sack guy a year won't be coming cheap and with how our staff has been with contracts recently, I think they'll factor in the future when giving an offer to Hardy. You also have to factor in we won't be the only team interested in Hardy at the end of the season.

You could be right. I mean I don't think they will let Hardy go elsewhere if he is a dominant player... but we can't know for sure.

You make solid points about all the players Dallas is going to have to pay for in the next few years. There will be a lot. However, in just a few more years Dallas is, unfortunately, not going to have to pay Romo what they are now. Even if they have to sign Martin, or Frederick before Romo leaves, they will be able to move some money forward for when Romo's salary is off the cap.

Not to mention that the cap will continue going up.

There are so many ways that they can work things with the cap that if they want to keep Hardy, they will be able to.

Maybe I'm wrong but when I try to decide if I think they'll keep Hardy or let him walk, I look more at his age, his position, how valuable he is, how versatile he is, and how his presence effects the team, not only on the field, but in the locker room and at practice.

To me, all of those things scream a keeper to the Cowboys. After QB, a pass rusher might be the second most difficult to find player in the mind of the Cowboys. Dallas has repeatedly mentioned how great Hardy is at practice and what he does for the psyche of the defense and the tempo and pace that the team practices at. The guy is as hard a worker as anyone in the league.

Right now, the team loves him and if he delivers on the field like he has everywhere else, I easily can see him being kept at a high price.

Am I right? I don't know. Are you? I don't know. I can see it happening either way and there are good reasons for both sides.

The one thing we all know is that it is going to be fun finding out.

The cowboys are much more cap conscious than ever before, they let guys like Bruce Carter, Justin Durant and Dwayne Harris go so they can budget accordingly in the future

Nice post and points. I watched RG alot at Nebraska and he was a very good player but not great, especially against the run. He will flash this year but he's still a rookie. NOT a top 10 talent IMHO. Maybe top 20-25...not top 10 as so many on here keep saying. I really like him and Collins. Jones? Not so sure due to his shoulder. We really need Jones to step up after OScan went down, but like I said about RG: he's a rookie. Learning curve is steep.
