Yes, you do. It happens all the time. We have a cap to manage; we have offensive lineman in the future that need to be signed, we have a DT that may want a bigger deal if he plays at a high level again this year, we'll be in the market for a #1 corner next year. Hardy is a luxury, we have the luxury of saying "We have a young talent behind Hardy with high upside, we can let him walk and address another position on our defense".
I think the argument of keeping him at a high price that I could buy into is how much we use him across the line, if he moves DE spots, if he plays some DT. What I do know is, a 11-15 sack guy a year won't be coming cheap and with how our staff has been with contracts recently, I think they'll factor in the future when giving an offer to Hardy. You also have to factor in we won't be the only team interested in Hardy at the end of the season.
You could be right. I mean I don't think they will let Hardy go elsewhere if he is a dominant player... but we can't know for sure.
You make solid points about all the players Dallas is going to have to pay for in the next few years. There will be a lot. However, in just a few more years Dallas is, unfortunately, not going to have to pay Romo what they are now. Even if they have to sign Martin, or Frederick before Romo leaves, they will be able to move some money forward for when Romo's salary is off the cap.
Not to mention that the cap will continue going up.
There are so many ways that they can work things with the cap that if they want to keep Hardy, they will be able to.
Maybe I'm wrong but when I try to decide if I think they'll keep Hardy or let him walk, I look more at his age, his position, how valuable he is, how versatile he is, and how his presence effects the team, not only on the field, but in the locker room and at practice.
To me, all of those things scream a keeper to the Cowboys. After QB, a pass rusher might be the second most difficult to find player in the mind of the Cowboys. Dallas has repeatedly mentioned how great Hardy is at practice and what he does for the psyche of the defense and the tempo and pace that the team practices at. The guy is as hard a worker as anyone in the league.
Right now, the team loves him and if he delivers on the field like he has everywhere else, I easily can see him being kept at a high price.
Am I right? I don't know. Are you? I don't know. I can see it happening either way and there are good reasons for both sides.
The one thing we all know is that it is going to be fun finding out.
