Congrats to one of the best power pitchers of our time. I know he has a surly personality, but you can't deny his career. It took him a bit because of those early years, but he gets number 300 today and has a chance to get to 5000 career strikeouts by the end of the season, when he will be 46 years old.

He's gonna be the last one we see get 300 wins for probably 15 years.... it may never be done again. I don't know what it is, but pitchers just don't have the longevity any more and they're getting more rest than they used to.

Congrats to the Unit.

Yeah I forgot to write that in my thread. I don't see anyone staying in for that long. Mike Mussina had a chance had he not retired after last season. He retired with 270.

I think we'll see it again. I don't know how long it will take but we will see it again I think.

I think a guy like Roy Halladay has a shot at 300. Halladay has 140 wins now. His first 4 years in the league, he didn`t have great success but over the last seven complete seasons, he`s averaged 16 wins a season. He`s leading the majors in wins this season with 9 already. He could post a 20 win season this year. If he does, that means that he only needs 140 more wins. He`s 32 now. Lets say he pitches another 10 years, he only has to average 14 wins a year and I think that`s well within his reach if he stays healthy.

Andy Pettitte has 220 wins. He`s pitched 15 years but lets say he goes another 6 years, which is very possible, he takes very good care of himself. He`s averaged right at 15 wins a season throughout his career. If he pitched 6 more years, he would be at 310 wins, averaging 15 a year.

Santana could do it if he stays healthy. Mussina is really close. He has averaged 15 wins over his career. He won 20 games in 08. If he decided to come back, it would not be real hard for him to reach 300. He`s only pitched 18 seasons. He could do it.

I thought Halladay might have a shot too when I was first thinking about it. But I doubt it and here's why.

He just turned 32, and yes he's at 140 wins right now. But that's including the 9 wins he already has this season. So if he wins 20 games this year, he'll be at 151. It would be his third time winning 20 games, doing it also in 2003 and 2008.

If he's at 150 going into next season, that's 10 more seasons averaging 15 wins to make it. In his career (10 years) he's bested 15 wins 5 times. And he hasn't averaged 15 wins to this point, when he's in his prime.

I just don't think he'll get there, at least not if he stays in Toronto. They won't be able to provide him with the offense to do it for 10 years. Last year he had 20 wins but had 11 losses, with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. He's right on pace with those numbers this season, but he's getting help from the offense and has only 1 loss.

I think the only way he's got a shot is to win like 27 games this season and get out of Toronto ASAP.

If Halladay stays healthy, I think he has a good chance. 04 and 05 hurt him a little bit but his numbers are improving and he has an excellent chance of winning 25 this year IMO.

What of the other guys I mentioned?

If Andy Petitte stays in NY and stays healthy and decides to keep pitching, he would get close. He is about to turn 37. I just don't think it will happen.

We won't see another 300 win pitcher again in our lives. Pettite has 2 more years tops. Santana will break down and Halladay is just a longshot.

I don't know guys. The fact that SLATE comes out with this statment almost insures that they may all win 300.

;)

LOL... Nevermind. I take back everything I said.

I thought Mussina already retired?? Maybe I missed something.

Pettitte has already retired and unretired once too right? With him already doing that, I just find it hard to imagine him going another 6 years.

Santana could be a threat, but he's older than Sabathia and IIRC, they're only a couple wins apart. So CC is probably the best shot. The thing I worry about with Sabathia is his health... His legs are taking a beating right now with him being so bulky. That's got to catch up with him at some point.

Baseball Prospectus ran a piece on this today. The most likely guys:

Sabathia: 28 years old, 120 wins, on the Yankees. He's been durable so far, despite his size.

Halladay: 32, 139. He's a little old, but his strikeout rate is very high, which is the best indicator for a pitcher's longevity.

Santana: 30, 114.

Peavy: 28, 89. Needs to get traded (and accept the trade) to a winning team.

Obviously, everything has to go right for any of these guys to make it. The amazing thing is, there's nobody right now who's even halfway there who has a real shot. Only 7 guys have 150+ wins: Moyer, Pettitte, Pedro, Smoltz, Wakefield, Colon, Livan Hernandez. Ok, Pettitte has a shot, but he's always talking about retirement (or actually retiring).

It WILL happen again. They were talking about the death of the 300 winner in the 70s and 80s and then a slew of pitchers hit the mark during this decade. If you check the history of it there have been quite a few long gaps and then a bunch of guys hit it within a 5-10 year stretch. We will probably go 10-15 years before the next guy does it but rest assured, it will happen again.

Pitchers aren't lasting as long, which means it's less likely they get the decision, but at the same time the average pitcher's career is longer than it was even 20 years ago, so it all evens out over the course of a career.

(Btw, Randy Johnson only had 68 career wins when he turned 30. I'm not saying what he did after that is typical by no means, but it's very difficult to accurately project what a player will or will not accomplish 10-15 years from now.)

Good Lord...

I've never heard a fan base be so excited about being in first place in June. You've even got your very own minor league catch phrase.

Guess it's pretty evident who the only MLB franchise without a playoff win is. :D

They have won a playoff game you dolt. They haven't won a playoff series. Get your facts straight before you spew garbage and look stupid bandwagonning Stankee fan.

Obviously you're cluessless to where the phrase "First Place Texas Rangers" even came from, so move along.

Well, duh I meant series. You take that one actual playoff game you have won... great feather for your cap.

And I'm not a Yankee fan, so get your facts straight...

I don't know where the phrase came from. But it's stupid.
