McCann signed with the Yankees for 5/85M. Kind of a bummer, but I wonder if this affects them trying to re-sign Cano. I still think we are in play for him. Choo, Beltran, and Cruz are still out there as well.

Don't think TEX wants to emulate PHI and end up with a bunch of 30+ guys on the downside of their careers locked into long-term contracts which eat up a huge chunk of the payroll every year and provide only diminishing returns.

Think we'll go for just one more big-name to fill one of the LF or C or DH spots, then fill whatever holes are left over with cheap reclamation projects like Morse (1B/LF/DH) or interesting possible late-bloomers like D. Navarro (C) on one-year or one-year-with-a-team-option-for-a-2nd-type contracts.

It'd be fun if we got Saltalamacchia and M. Young back with Young backing up at 3B and 2B (backup SS covered by Profar). Not sure Young would go for being only a backup though.

I hear where you all are coming from with regards to very large contracts (there will be considerable revenue increase for the Rangers with upcoming TV deals and hopefully some WS championships). I'm just intrigued by the possibility of the Rangers making such a huge splash to try to win multiple world series in the next 5 years. I don't think either Fielder or Cano are in the downside of their careers. 29 years old and 31 years old respectively. Fielder's slight drop off in production last year can be explained, but we have not seen any drop off with Cano. Again, I know it's a long shot. Beltran (DH) and Choo (OF) would be nice as well. Navarro would be a nice complement to Soto.

am I the only one that saw Fielder choke on his own fat in the postseason? Damn, I hope he's just half as good as you guys are propping him up to be.

he was bad but had been very good to get them to the post-season.
he is coming to one of the most left hand hitting friendly parks in all of baseball and replacing mitch friggin moreland....
hard to not see this one as a ginormous win.

No one is going to give Cano $300M or close to it (low 200s at most). The scenario includes trading Andrus and moving Profar to SS (his natural position). If they can trade Andrus (which JD has said they are listening to offers on all their infelders) that creates a spot for Cano and frees up $15M per year to spend on him. A lot has to work for that to happen, but I guarantee you this is a plausible scenario for JD and they'll try hard to make it work.

My Boss is a big Yankees fan ans he sees the Rangers as the biggest threat for Cano.
I told him it was very, very unlikely given the 200m it will take to make it happen.

Unless Cano lets his money get mad he is staying in NY IMHO.

I guess I was talking about later on in their lengthy contracts when they're in their early-to-mid-30's. We've seen how quickly 30-somethings Hamilton and Pujols have dropped off and how the Angels are going to be stuck with their contracts for years (they'll be paying Pujols $30 mil when he's 40) because they're going to be totally untradeable.

Wish we didn't have to rely on expensive FA's to fill holes. For all the hype our farm system gets, we haven't drafted and developed an elite-level position prospect in years. Guess there's Chris Davis, and Profar might turn out to be one but other than that...(crickets chirping)...
