Rangers have $32M in committed salary next year.

The following players have options/team control:

Guerrero- $9M ($1M buyout included in above figure, unless they option and Guerrero declines)

Josh Hamilton- will get approx. $10M in arbitration if he wins the MVP.

CJ Wilson- will get approx. $5M in arbitration

Darren Oliver- $3.25M option (0.5M buyout incl. in above figure)

Nelson Cruz- will get approx. $3M in arbitration

Appropriate another $10M for guys making league minimum (not included above) and etc. Thats about $62.5M in payroll, without Guerrero. Given Vlad's production, I think that option gets picked up, since he's worth a bit more than $8M (the marginal cost of keeping him). So it's $70.5M. They will certainly have some payroll room to play around with, whether it's working out extensions for guys or keeping Cliff Lee (but probably not both).

Cliff Lee's eventual deal will probably be like $23-$25M/year (about CC Sabathia money).

My prediction for Lee's contract:

4 years, $76 million with incentives.

I bet he gets well over $20M. I think you're dreaming. CC's contract was 7 years $161M (or $23M/year)

That would be a steep discount to stay in Texas. Not sure why he would give THAT steep a discount.

Besides, I bet he demands more than a 4 year contract. I bet it's closer to 6 years.

I don't think $19 million a season would be that steep of a discount to be honest. At that rate, he'd be the third highest paid pitcher in baseball, just a shade behind Johan Santana and a few million less than Sabathia. It'd also make him one of the ten highest paid players in baseball.

You may be right on the length however. He may ask for a 5 or 6 year deal.

The Yankees need pitching, they have money coming off the books and they want Lee. They will offer Lee Sabathia money, and if he takes a discount to stay in Texas, it won't be ~$5M/year. Maybe a couple million.
