SWEET, Pudge is back!!
=================

The best catcher in the history of the franchise and one of the top in the history of the game is coming back to the Rangers. Sources have confirmed that the Rangers completed a trade Tuesday morning with Houston for Ivan Rodriguez for two minor-leaguers.

Rodriguez was the catcher the last time the Rangers went to the playoffs in 1999. They enter play today with a one-game lead in the wild-card standings. They also have some uncertainty behind the plate.

A source said Rodriguez will serve as the backup for Taylor Teagarden, who has assumed the starting duties with Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the disabled list. Saltalamacchia was placed on the DL on Saturday with arm fatigue and was told today by vascular specialist Dr. Greg Pearl that he has thoracic outlet syndrome.

Saltalamacchia, though, said that he will stretch and rehab the arm over the next few weeks and was told that he could play again this season.

"I'm going to play through it, and hopefully it goes away," Saltalamacchia said. "He [Pearl] thinks that if I stretch it out and do the rehab, there's a chance I can overcome it.

"I don't want my season to end. We're in the hunt, and I want to help out as much as I can."

The Rangers, though, added catching help in Rodriguez, who played for the Rangers from 1991 to 2002. He won 10 Gold Gloves and was the American League MVP in 1999. The Rangers won the AL West title with him behind the plate in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

He signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Astros in March after starring for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. The Rangers are responsible for a prorated portion of the contract, which includes $1.5 million in incentives.

Rodriguez is hitting .251 with eight homers and 34 RBI in 327 at-bats.

My favorite Ranger of all time :) Was Palmerio, but we know where that went.

Sweet Dawg! Of course, he doesn't hit .300 anymore and his arm isn't a laser anymore. Still a rocket, just not a laser.

I remember when Darren Oliver was pitching for the Rangers and the TV guys were speculating on who threw faster, Oliver to Pudge, or Pudge to Oliver. :laugh2:

As a fan of the Astros I hate to see Pudge go he is a great guy. I enjoyed his short stay with Houston and wish him the best with the Rangers. I just hope the minor league prospect can help the Astros down the line and hopefully one or both will be pitchers

I love Pudge and all, he was maybe my favorite player growing up, but I'm about 95% sure he took steroids too looking back on it. His body and hitting ability changed pretty dramatically a few years into his career. Still think he's great though.

Has anyone heard what the Rangers gave up? All I see is two draft picks. I'm ok with this as long as they weren't two of our more highly touted prospects.

Astros site only says unnamed minor league prospects.

Nope, only one has been named, yet they have not released that name yet. Hopefully, he wasn't a high end prospect. A 37 year old catcher isn't worth that much.

I agree. I would not doubt that he tried some sort of performance enhancing drug at some point in his career. I don't think much is made of him doing it because he did not start having 40 and 50 home run seasons. He has only 5 years of hitting more than 20 home runs with 35 home runs being his best year and the only season he hit more than 30 in a season. Guys like Luis Gonzales and Brady Anderson had comparable home run hitting abilities, but both guys suddenly hit over 50 in a single year. That sets off more red flags than anything Pudge ever did.

He and Juan Gonzales were best friends in Texas. Of course he at least tried roids and he got them from the same place Juan got his. (probably same for A-Roid and Tex too) His HRs were pure bat speed HRs. The guy could get that bat around in a hurry.

Don't forget the Jose Canseco connection. He introduced the Rangers to steroids if they had not already been familiar with them due to Ruben Sierra's time on the team. That guys physique changed dramatically.

And of course there is also Tom House. He has admitted he tried steroids as a player in the 1970s. He spent plenty of time in Texas as a coach.
