I can't see how this would benefit the Rangers.

The guy is well on the downside of the career.

They should be thinking "rebuild" at this point.

He can help them some, but he joins a crowed outfield and he's just another 30+ year-old added to their lineup.

It's not like the Rangers are going to be playoff team this season.

The actually are paying him until the mid-2030's but it's all chump change compared to Hamilton.

I read an interesting analysis that showed how the Mets were wise and Bonilla was foolish to structure the deal the way they did. The problem is that the Mets were investing the money with a guy named Bernie Madoff so it was all essentially stolen from them.

Here's why it really wasn't a stupid move: suppose someone owes you $6 million. They offer you a deal and say: "instead of us giving you $6 million right now, we will give you $1.2 million a year for 25 years starting 10 years from now."

As crazy as it sounds, based on current versus future value of money, you would be unwise to accept that offer.

The deal is a good one for the Rangers.
They are only playing 6m total for 3 years of Hamilton.

Why it matters on the field?
Texas has the worst production in baseball from the left field position.
Even this current version of Hambone is better than that.
They know they aren't getting a 10m a year guy but 2ma year? Yes, he is still that.

Texas also has terrible DH production. In a year or two Josh can become your DH.

A value price-wise in left-field and/or DH is huge.

Texas can't just play the young guys. They need to include them in trades with poor values: Elvis/Choo/Fielder
That's just to get the roster back on an even keel.

This is a deal like moving Texeira. It won't be popular when ti happens but it could later be viewed as a catalyst for a playoff team.

Also, I wouldn't write this season off yet by any means. The AL West is soft and the Rangers have guys returning to help the cause.
This trade could give them a nice free piece of that puzzle who has had plenty of rest for a body that struggles going 162.
