This seems to be the major point of contention, coaching vs talent, as to why the Cowboys have not advanced beyond the divisional round and I am interested in knowing where posters have both of these critical elements ranked.

Is it possible that the Cowboys are neither over nor underachieving but just achieving?

This is NFC only and you do not have to rank the HC's, and may not know all of their names, but rank your top 6 teams and where you feel this coaching staff ranks. I know the OC is new but that's the assignment.

New Orleans
Los Angeles
Philadelphia
Chicago
Dallas
Seattle

I have this coaching staff at 6, behind those teams above.

You actually have them at fifth.

Yes, they'd be 6th (or 5th) on that list.

Philly, New Orleans and Seattle have SB winning head coaches. LA has owned us under their new coach and made a SB.

The only quibble I might have is Nagy in Chicago. I like him but he needs to show way more. So if people want to rank Garrett and this staff above the Bears', I won't quibble with that at this point.

In the end, what I think we have is a coach that's good enough (or average enough) to win some regular season games and make the playoffs. But when you make the playoffs, there's a premium placed on coaching as you are now facing better teams where the talent advantages are often mitigated............ it's at that time where a coaching staff that is competent and is creative and has the ability to adapt on the fly shines more often than not.

I don't believe we have that kind of staff, especially that kind of head coach. Maybe Moore is really a wunderkind and somehow changes the trajectory of this franchise as its OC.

I need an explanation as to how you have Dallas' coaching above two Super Bowl winning coaching staffs.
It's not a resume contest. Who is the best coach right now going into this season is how I look at the question posed by the OP.

Also, I considered the entire coaching staff and not just the HC.

I have to agree. the void at the very top drags us to the bottom. our coordinators and asst. coaches are improving.

Seattle is the only team that's really close to us. Caroll is a defensive expert who pulled a decent unit together out of Bobby Wagner, Frank Clark and a box of scraps, but his OC is legitimately as dumb as Linehan.

How much stock do we put into winning a Super Bowl? Like with Peterson he was great the Super Bowl year but not so much the other two years.....I’m not a fan of Payton’s aggressiveness but yeah I wouldn’t rank him higher.

When it comes to Garrett....I pretty much agree with rankings that have him at the middle of the pact. He won 13 games when Romo went down but his coaching tenure has been all over the place. The only positive he has is he hasn’t lost his team. But to me he should be judged based on how he coaches in games he’s not suppose to win and he’s done decent at that in the regular season but not so much in the post season.

OK. Two seasons ago the Eagles coaching staff won a SB. Last year, they went as far as we did in the playoffs. How can one conclude then that the Cowboys are the better staff? That we swept them in 2018?

I put a lot of stock in a SB win. Plus, for as being "not so much" in 2018, let's note his Eagles team only finished a game behind us and went as far as we did in the playoffs.

You won't find many, if any, people outside the Cowboys fan world that would put Jason Garrett and this staff above Philly's.

This makes your choice even more peculiar. Because our OC is a guy who has never called a game before in his life. Who knows what kind of OC he might be? The uncertainty of our OC compared to the stability of the Eagles staff (and note, Pederson calls the plays so there is continuity on offense there), makes a comparison of staffs even odder.

I honestly feel that I have the Eagles coaching staff too high on my list. But as I previously stated as I look at the coaching staff going into this season.....which isnt the same as last season....I believe we have a better staff over all.

I don't even think many Cowboy fans would say that. I wouldn't. But to me he and Garrett are of the same caliber. But that's becauseI don't think much of Peterson.

And Cowboys had a great run last year. But I don't forget they were 3-5 at one point. But we look at that season a little different going 7-1.

And by no means am I making the case for Garrett as being better. If I had no my choice of head coach it wouldn't be either of them. Sean Payton is a different story.

Well that's why I say how much do we take into account winning a super bowl? I think it means more if you consistently win as opposed to stinking two seasons and winning a Super Bowl in the middle of it. I think their DC Schwartz is terrible too. Not sure if he's still there to not but yeah I'm not that impressed with their coaching staff but I'm well aware many an say the same about our staff.

No, the team at 5th and the coaching staff at 6th, I have SEA ahead of them in coaching. I think the talent level is one notch above the coaching level.

So answer this for me. If the team talent is #5 on the list and the coaching talent is #6 then how did we go 4-2 against those teams last year? (2-0 Philly, 1-0 Saints, 1-1 Seahawks, 0-1 Rams). Did our players out perform better players or did our coaches out coach better coaches. I'm not sure that Doug Pederson brought inadequate replacements for Frank Reich and Joe Defilippo. Frank Reich may have been the big loss looking at what he is doing in Indy.

Pederson has been a coach for three seasons. The only bad one was 2016, his first year. He won a SB in 2017 and then his team had basically the same success we did in 2018. I mean if 2018 was a bad season for Pederson then Garrett's has to be viewed in the same light.
