Ranking the "short list" for Single High Free Safeties

Just to cover themselves at the position prior to the draft. Keeping Woods around for depth, wouldn't stop them from taking a high safety prospect.
That’s not covering yourself at the position. That’s paying a player who can’t play, who ties up a roster spot, just to “feel good”. It does zero to actually fill the position. That’s how bad X. Woods is.

They are going to try to cover themselves prior to the draft. It's very likely it's going to be Woods or a similar low level signee.

I'm not feeling Woods coming back at all and certainly not as a starter. I'd be highly surprised if they're not interested in upgrading his position and bringing back isn't an upgrade. Just me I see him walking......

seems these nfl blogs around the league are little higher on him them Cowboy fans. They name him as a starter quality safety and seems be lumped into that 2nd tier of safeties available in free agency. hopefully someone signs woods to a contract worthy of a 5th round or better comp pick.

You know how Stephen Jones uses fa. Add in the cap might be decreased and they need to sign their QB. Expect a low level veteran to be signed if it’s Xavier Woods or someone similar. I don’t like it, but this is how they operate.

Nothing more then veteran depth, kind of like how they signed Thompson last year. I would much rather fill the need with a quality option, but they haven’t done that in years

I guess the other part of what I'm saying (asking), why would sign a new multi-year deal if we can't/wont promise him a starting position. You and I agree on a lot sh..... but I'm not feeling this.... at all (lol). Remember he's the FS, a position critical to Quinn's defense as you've said. They need to get this right........bringing Woods back doesn't do that.

Caden Sterns (jersey #7) from Texas is who I would target in the 2nd or 3rd round (I don't believe he will make it out of the 2nd round).

6'1", 207 lbs, 4.48 40.

Strengths:

Coverage, coverage, coverage. For a guy that looks more like your traditional strong safety, Texas safety Caden Sterns is more known for his ability to cover from both man and zone schemes. Sterns, a former four-star recruit out of Texas, has played in multiple roles for the Longhorns defense, playing both single-high, two-high, box, and the nickel role. Showcases impressive length at the position, Sterns is very physical at the line of scrimmage when asked to press receivers at the line in coverage. Fluid athleticism allows him to transition throughout the route-stem and flip his hips and run and cover space when playing the centerfield position. Had a ton of success reading quarterbacks keys early in his career to take the football away when playing in coverage. Noticeable arm length allows him to crowd catch points, recover if beaten across the middle of the field. Was a much more physical player in 2020, showing more willingness to stick his nose into the running game, and better angles when playing sideline-to-sideline. Good instincts against both the run and the pass, but could stand to trust them a bit more as he develops. Versatility stands out, as he isn’t a one-trick-pony on the backend for the Longhorns defense.

Weaknesses:

While angles and run game support improved in 2020, had some struggles in those areas earlier in his career. Good instincts, but could tell at times he was hesitant to trust them when driving on the ball or anticipating deep, sideline throws from the centerfield position. Has a tendency to dip his head at the strike-point, allowing ball carriers to bounce off tackle attempts due to inability to keep his eyes on, and drive through ball carriers. Dealt with his fair share of nagging injuries throughout his career at Texas. Nothing major, but missed multiple games due to being banged up.

Overall Summary:

In today’s NFL, the league loves defensive backs that can play multiple roles, and cover on the backend. Caden Sterns can do both, very well. Sterns, a three-year starter at Texas, was one of the Longhorns leaders on the defensive side of the ball, and his maturity and effort is off the charts for the former DFW native. Sterns showed success as a man and zone defender, and succeeded in his multiple responsibilities at Texas. Athleticism shines on tape, and should be confirmed with results from Pro Day, or however the NFL decides to handle the NFL Combine. Really good length at the position, and the ability to cover, and willingness as a run defender took big strides in 2020. If Caden Sterns can continue to develop his trust in his instincts and anticipation, and keep his body healthy, he should have a very long, successful career in the NFL. For Cowboys fans, Dan Quinn and Co. would love to keep the Texas born defensive back close to home in Dallas.

Whom ever they decided to sign in fa at the position, will probably be nothing more then a 1 year deal, low level contract. Say it's Kazee, instead of Woods. This will provide depth in which the team isn't forced to reach to fill a need. Why would anyone sign a low level, 1yr deal to play for the Cowboys? They see the depth chart and believe they can beat out any rookie they may draft for the starting job. Playing for the Cowboys gives them that national exposure in which 1 solid season could net them a more sizable contract the following off-season. For a player like Woods, it's a chance to rebound for last season, such players like Kazee, Hooker, it's a chance to show that they are fully healthy. I just don't see the Cowboys signing even a mid-tier Safety this off-season.

We have no idea of the slotting for the two top safeties in Moehrig/Grant, it's quite possible, we miss out on both players. After them, there is a huge drop-off at the position, where the likes of Kazee, Hooker and even Woods could be better starting options for next season. Of coarse, they will still draft a prospect, but the likelihood of them beating out a low level veteran is 50/50 at best.

He is more of a day 3 prospect at the position.

Did you see him play while at Texas? He's got the talent and potential to be pretty good. Caden won't last till Day 3 of the Draft.

No, haven't watched him too much, but everything I've heard/read, he is more of a developmental safety who struggles in run support.

Agreed. He’s definitely way below about 6-7 other guys on my list

It's happened before, I remember the Patriots traded for Wes Welker for a 2nd rd pick, but not sure if his contract was up in a year. I don't think Gallup is as good as a Wes Welker, nor a Brandon Cooks for was also traded.
Cooks was traded multiple times....I think for a first round pick each time.

It’s not even depth if they can’t play. It’s like the Emperors new clothes.

Trade down to 18-22 and take Moehrig

then use the 2 rd 2 picks on DT and LB depending on value

I would try like heck to trade Gallup for a 2 because there is no way we are signing him after the year

I agree for a 2nd Rounder but damn I hate taking him out of our lineup he makes some tough clutch catches
