Ranking the Top Edge Rushers for the Cowboys

Rashard Robinson is a jag. Canady is more of a slot only type of corner, I really don't think he will have a big role in our defense.
Robinson is a jag as is every other 5th cb on a team. And Canady is 6'1 so i dont see how he cant play outside in this scheme. Hes started games in the nfl before unlike CJ Goodwin. What free agent corner would you want? And this is with knowing were drafting a guy high. Why pay for a backup corner?

Ojalari does nothing for the run defense. Confusing post

Do you think a DE is unable to effect the run game? Have you watched Lawrence the last few years blow up runs in the backfield or in the flat?

They can absolutely effect the run game.

Hes like 250 pounds though. Hes not steooing in as a rookie affecting our run d. Agree to disagree

Why you sign a backup corner? Bridge starter if a rookie isn't ready, needs some development, depth in case of injury and in certain extra defensive back packages. I think you should temper your expectations on Canady, he may not even make the final roster. He has been a backup player for his entire career.

You think the Cowboys would pass on Surtain? People think he is a big slow corner. I would draft two off ball linebackers between the third and 5th rounds. LVE and Jaylon are not cutting it. I don’t think either will be on the team in 2022.
Think team has no choice but to pick up Lve's option for 2022. Agree, with doubling up in that area. Yes, I do believe there is a chance they pass on Surtain.

I just dont see much difference between Canady, brown, lewis. Theyre all backups to me and what you usually get with 4th/5th cbs.

I would not use the #10 on Ojulari.
He looked good in Voch’s film study, but he seems to have only one move at this point, no bull rush, no spin, just the speedy attack of the outside shoulder and hand. He can’t be a DE at 6’ 3” and 240, so I’d want to see a lot more of him at LB. He played in a unique 3-4 at Georgia where the coach prefers small, light, quick OLBs. At number 10 of the first round, he needs to bring more to the table, IMO.

We have some smaller edge players from last year to look at and develop. If we draft another DE, I prefer one with enough size to be effective in our rotation.

Ojulari is an easy pick for Edge1 for me as well.

If you haven’t already, go check out Weaver from Pitt.

I need to watch Weaver even more now...

Per PFF:

“Highest single-season pass-rush win rates over the past two years among P5 defenders with PA, screens & RPOs removed:

1. Chase Young — 36% (2019)
2. Rashad Weaver — 30% (2020)
T-3. Boogie Basham — 27% (2019)
T-3. Jaelan Phillips — 27% (2020“

Nice find!

I know you like Basham so I think you’ll like him.

He’s similar too in that he’s not super twitched up and overly bendy, but great size / length combo and can win against the run and pass.

Front Office has always liked Tyrone Crawford's positional flex. I believe they will draft this type of player over more of a pure 3T. One who can player DE against the run and kick inside against the pass. Weaver looks like a 3rd rd prospect and a nice alternative if they are unable to land a Basham. Think Turner/Sample would be more 4th rd players who fill the same role. We got to figure one of these tweeners along with a 1T DT will be the types they target in the draft.

This year's group doesn't have that Chase Young or Miles Garrett, but has some good depth at the position. Cowboys just have Tank/Gregory under contract with the jag Armstrong and the unproven Anea behind them, depth is a major concern. You would think a veteran is signed, but adding another quality edge rusher is an important need. Here are my top 10 Edges for the Cowboys:

1-Ojulari Georgia (we need to start putting him in the conversation at pick #10)
2-Phillips Miami (medical/durability concerns could make him fall, but extremely talented rusher)
3-Paye Michigan (tremendous run defender, but needs work at a pass rusher, best 4T in the Class for our D)
4-Ossai Texas (non-stop motor, a little raw as a pass rusher, has some versatility to his game)
5-Oweh Penn State(the ball of clay prospect, with elite traits, may need time to develop)
6-Basham Wake Forest (my pet cat, very technical LE who can kick inside in the nickel, pocket pusher)
7-Rosseau Miami (tremendous 1 yr production, but new to the position, David Irving type boom/bust)
8-Tyron Washington (more of a fit for a hybrid defense, most likely will become a 3-4 OLB)
9-Rouche Miami (some compare him to Daryl Tapp, who played with Seattle and Quinn)
10-Jones II Pittsburgh (many see him higher, but disappointed at the Senior Bowl)

I honestly don't think DE is the Cowboys problems it really depends if they lose any in free agency BUT in saying this
we are not going to improve in the 2021 Draft our DE position what we have is actually better. We need to improve the DT
position, linebacker and secondary thats where the issues are on the defense and OL is a problem on offense.

An inside/outside defensive lineman helps the entire defense.

Neal is a stud when healthy, but he essentially brings the same skill set Wilson has. WIlson showed enough promise for me to give him the SS role.

I think someone like Marcus Maye would be a good target.

give me one of Williams/Maye/Harrison

You could honestly make a case for any position across our entire defense...it’s that bad.

That’s why we really need to take BPA especially if it’s a defender.
