I don't know why but just been feeling this for the last couple of weeks .......my guess would be a day-2 QB

* Stephen Jones admitting they are hoping to draft a QB ( notice he did say what round but fans assume day-3 )
*They did not attempt to retain Rush or Lance
* We have not heard connections to any free-agent QBs
* Dak situation is bit similar to 2015 when Romo missed most of the season and they went hunting for his replacement in the following draft (2016).
* Remember the 2016 draft......Jerry and Romo were telling everyone he had 2-3 more years left. Jerry agreed with Romo but came this close to drafting his replacement, 1st on Paxton Lynch and 2nd on Connors, both failed.
* Dak has how many years before an out or contract expires ..........2-3

QB seems likely from rd 2 on. Depends who it is. I can see Sanders in Dallas easily. Would Dallas draft him at 12? What if he's there? I think I would wait til pick 44 at earliest. I feel he's sliding alot.

No way on Sanders.......hell even he said, if you ain't trying to change the culture don't draft me. It's going to take a strong GM and HC to draft this kid. Earlier mocks had him linked to the Raiders and Giants. Carroll and Brady shut that down with the Geno trade. The fact the Giants went hard after Stafford and is waiting for Rogers speaks volumes.

I honestly think the best team/coach for him is the Steelers.........Tomlin is the one coach with enough clout and security to keep this kid AND Deion in check.

Might work there in Pittsburgh but Sanders better realize who the boss is real quick. Loose lips sink ships. He's gotta ditch this me me me thing he's got going on. His daddy was able to pull it off but this is different on many levels. Humility is needed. Tomlin teaching the kid about life, the QB position and teamwork could be special. But he's got a be willing to listen, learn. Otherwise, he's out of the league and playing Canadian ball in 5 years or less.

I promise, if Sanders goes to Pittsburgh, there will be a Dutch uncle type of talk day 1 in Tomlins office. He won't tolerate selfishness very long. I didn't like what I saw last year from the kid. His antics on the sidelines and overall look, wearing jewelry in the games or on the team sidelines is unfortunate and not a great trend. He don't seem mature enough. Not sure he gets it yet.

So true..........First, he has an ego the size of his Dad but is missing the fact Deion was a generational talent and he's a little above average at best. All the media, social media and PR exposure don't mean a hill of beans to NFL coaches and GMs. In fact, some are turned off according to a few nuggets.
In a way, I blame Deion coz he pounding this kid with how much hard work, discipline, and right attitude he's going to need. Instead, he's pumping the kid's ego nonstop..........
But like you said.......the NFL will humble you real fast..........

I don’t see the point of it.

Just as I didn’t with the 4th rounder absolutely wasted on Trey Lance.

If you locked in to Prescott for 3-4 years, using a premium draft pick on a backup who likely never plays is a waste of resources.
Honestly, IMO 2027 is likely Dak's final year as a Cowboy seeing the way his contract is structured. 2028 final year has $80M cap hit but the dead cap is only $34M. The dead cap for this year (2025) is $150M. His contract is very tradeable after the 2027 season.

So drafting a day-2 QB gives you two years to groom him to maybe compete for the starting job in 2027. Remember Romo sat on the bench a year before playing.

I think the real question is how many QBs are worthy of day-2 grades

After 2027 is 3 years.

3 years into a 4-year rookie contract. After which you have to pay or quit.

So not only are you sitting a 2nd or 3rd round pick with no return, but even if they do play well, you have to replace one huge contract with another with no break.

Nowhere is this a good plan.

Who was Connars? I remember a Connar Cook who went to the Raiders 100th pick in 4th!

Your totally right

This is assuming Dak will be the starter for the next 3 years ..........I'm not sure of that if they use a high pick to draft his replacement. Dak will have only $63M guaranteed left on his contract prior to the 2027 season.
IMO FO has lost quite a bit of confidence in Dak but they are married to his contract for at least 2 more years. Get the impression they wanna push him with some serious competition over the next 2-3 years.......let the chips fall

  • $129M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2024 salary + 2025 salary)
  • $40M 2026 salary fully guarantees March 16, 2025 (injury guaranteed at signing)
  • $45M 2027 salary fully guarantees the 5th league day of 2026 (injury guaranteed at signing)
  • $17M of 2028 salary fully guarantees the 5th league day of 2027 (injury guaranteed at signing)

Jerry will finally spend a high draft pick on the quarterback position in a year when the draft sucks for the quarterback position

Cowboys just restructured Dak's new contract to create cap space for this year (2025). That means Dak's contract has now been extended into later years than originally posted on Spotrac which you showed above. ^^^^

“Only $63 million”?

Terrible QB draft. None of these guys outside the top 3 (Ward, Danders, Dart) would be worth a second or third. So the highest pick we'd use would likely be a 5th.

If Ewers is there in the 5th, I'd take him. Milroe would be worth a gamble too. We will probably end up with Cooper Rush Jr though in Kyle McCord
